Juicy Lucy 1970 Lie Back And Enjoy It

Genre: Blues-Rock

Time: 00:39:13

United Kingdom

Bio:

In the beginning there was a band called The Misunderstood. Hailed in the late sixties as pioneers of the psychedelic movement by the likes of Pink Floyd, their cause had been championed by John Peel who discovered them whilst he was working as a DJ in the US. He was so impressed by them that he produced their first recordings in 1966 and invited them to come to the UK, an offer they later took up. However, having made it to the UK the Vietnam draft in the US and problems with UK immigration services caused personnel problems and associated line up chages. Juicy Lucy was born out of their final line up in July 1969.

Taking their name from a character in Leslie Thomas' "Virgin Soldiers" Juicy Lucy were aiming to move away from the psychedelic sound of The Misunderstood to something more contemporary and commercial. Well, they certainly got that right with the first single from the self titled debut album. "Who Do You Love?", a cover of a Bo Diddley song, stamped it's way up the singles charts in the UK and several European countries in the spring of 1970, finally reaching number 14 in the UK and staying on the chart for three months. The album cover itself caused quite a stir, featuring as it did a woman lying naked, surrounded (and modesty preserved) by fruit!

Unfortunately all was not well in the Lucy camp. Personal differences took their toll and the band went through several line up changes to the extent that by the time of the band's last album "Pieces" none of the original members who had seared their way onto the scene with Who Do You Love remained in the band.

And so Juicy Lucy disappeared from sight. However, 1994 saw the return of the band with singer Ray Owen taking the position centre stage on vocals and guitar and ably assisted by Mike Jarvis (guitar) Spencer Blackledge (drums) and Andy Doughty (bass) the album "Here She Comes Again" saw the light of day. The band toured in support of the album, but could not reach out to either their old fans, or the new audience which they desired. Dispirited, that line-up called it a day in 1997.

Soon after the collapse of that incarnation of Juicy Lucy, Ray came into contact with Mr Fish. It was immediately obvious to each of them that the other had talent and so they decided to work together. Legal considerations at the time prevented them using the Juicy Lucy name, so they gigged and recorded as "Ray Owen's Moon", a name originally used for Ray's 1973 solo album. Over the course of the next few years there were several changes of personnel working alongside the dynamic duo; another guitarist as well as various drummers and bass players. Finally in 2002 Fletch came on to the scene. Possessing a remakable combination of skill, power and imagination he instantly fitted into place as the final piece of the puzzle and the band achieved a new level.

With a renewed enthusiasm the band set about writing, rehearsing and gigging. Although still out in the cold as far as the mainstream of the music industry was concerned, they set about working at the grass roots level. Doing the unthinkable, they were playing original music in pubs and small clubs, getting a great response and building up a following. By 2004 the situation with the Juicy Lucy name had been resolved and it was clear that the band had the capability to repeat, or even exceed, it's earlier success. Sanctuary Records had released "Who Do You Love - the anthology" and interest in the band was being shown from all over the world. By mid-2004 a management deal had been struck and Juicy Lucy was back in business!

Following a very successful relaunch of the band on an unsuspecting public on 16th February 2005, held at the famous Eel Pie Club in Twickenham, April 2005 saw the band setting out to gig across the UK. Kicking off supporting Saxon and Wishbone Ash in front of a crowd of 4000, they played at venues from Plymouth to Aberdeen and back again. Whether playing to long time fans from the '70s or to student audiences the response was the same; ecstatic! As one happy audience member was heard to say in Dundee "They're real live f****** rock stars, but nobody knows it yet!".

February 2006 saw the band supporting rock legends Nazareth at a string of dates up and down England as well as continuing to headline in their own right.

In June 2006 the band went in to The Levellers' Metway Studios in Brighton to work on the first new recordings for twelve years. The value of extensive live performance showed when it came to the recording sessions, with the band completing the tracking for eleven songs in four days! The result of these sessions was "Do That And You'll Lose It", released in September 2006.

Over the next two years the band continued to do things the old fashoined way; travelling the length and breadth of the UK, bringing their distinctive brand of blues-rock to the music loving public, building their fan base through hard work, determination and talent. In June 2008 bass player Fudge decided to leave for personal reasons and his role was taken up by the previously unseen but always present James. Not long after that upheaval Ray was taken seriously ill with a collapsed lung. This took him out of action during the height of the summer festival season. While he recovered the band continued to perform as a trio with Mr. Fish taking on vocal duties. Ray returned to the stage after only seven weeks but never managed to achieve full fitness and suffered a re-occurence of his lung problem at the end of October 2008 which required surgery on the lung itself to remove the damaged area.

Ray was expected to be fit enough to return to the band early in 2009, but the remaining trio of Mr. Fish, Fletch and James had realised in Ray's absence that changes needed to be made in order for the band to continue to develop both it's music and it's audience. When this was put to Ray in January 2009 he was not in agreement and decided not to return, leaving the core "power trio" to carry the Juicy Lucy legacy into it's 40th year. Infos VICTOR BROX

Manchester blues legend Victor Brox (born in Droylsden, 1940) is a musical virtuoso and as well as playing keyboards and singing he plays brass and guitar. He is one of Britain's greatest ever blues vocalists ranking alongside the likes of Chris Youlden, Joe Cocker and Steve Marriot at their best. This has been endorsed by Jimi Hendrix who was a great fan of Victor jamming and playing with him and the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation on many occasions in London and New-York.

Victor studied under a variety of blues pioneers such as Big Bill Broonzy, Bo Diddley, Brownie McGhee, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, Screaming Jay Hawkins, and played with B.B King, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Big Bill Bronzy, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillian of Deep Purple, Charlie Mingus, Noel Redding of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Memphis Slim, Dr. John, Keith Moon of The Who, Alexis Korner, Bill Coleman, Lord David Sutch, Tete Montelieu, T.T.Swanston, John Mayall, Graham Bond, Country Joe McDonald, Keith Moon, Marzette Watts, Sun Ra and Nico, Mick Jagger, Pink Floyd, Rory Gallagher, Marc Bolan. In the late 1960s, he was the front man of Aynsley Dunbar's Retaliation and also appeared as member of many blues outfits or as guest on several blues albums (vocals and sometimes keyboards). They released four albums: `Retaliation', `Doctor Dunbar's Prescription', `To Mum from Aynsley and the Boys' and 'Remains to be Heard .

He created the Victor Brox Blues Train (originally formed way back in the 60s with Annette his wife), which still exists, re-surfacing regularly. In 1970 Victor performed as Caiaphas on the original recording of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. Victor frequently appeared alongside his highly talented wife Annette Brox (vocals & percussion) and continues the tradition by singing with his daughters Kyla, Buffy and Anna.

This amazing artist, band leader, singer and multi-instrumentalist, is one the best know and longest enduring names in grass roots British blues. Allman Brothers Band 1971 Live At A&R Studios

Genre: Southern Rock
Rate: 192 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:10:37
Size: 97,03 MB

This album was recorded live at A&R Studios, New York, on August 26, 1971 and broadcast in stereo on WPLJ-FM. The objective of the broadcast was to promote their "Live At Fillmore East" album. The show was recorded two weeks after the death of King Curtis, who was a great friend, and a huge influence to the late, great Duane Allman, who also, tragically lost his life in a motorcycle crash in Macon on October 29, just two months after this show.

During the broadcast, Duane pauses to reflect on his late friend: "About King Curtis - that was one of the finest cats there ever was. He was just right on top of getting next to young people, you know? It's a shame. If y'all get the chance, listen to that album he made out at Fillmore West. Boy, it's incredible, it's unbelievable, the power and the emotional stature the man had. He's an incredible human being". A little over eight minutes into the song, `You Don't Love Me", Duane slows the band, leading everyone into his own version of `Soul Serenade'. When Duane repeats the melody of the song , the audience begins clapping along to the lovely tune. Suddenly, Duane jumps in and absolutely cuts the melody to shreds with one of the most emotional and passionate solos you will ever hear, taking it to another amaxing level. This is an incredible powerful, graceful, and loving musical eulogy for his lost friend.

Genre: Latin
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:45:44
Size: 104,56 MB

When Santana took to the stage on the afternoon of August 16, 1969, they were relatively unknown outside of the thriving Bay Area music scene. By the time they triumphantly walked off the stage they were considered one of the biggest SPAMises at the Woodstock Festival. "Their music was so exciting and fresh, it took people awhile to figure it out but when they finally did they just knocked everybody out," recounts Woodstock co-producer Michael Lang.

Santana delivered a career-making performance at Woodstock, melding Latin-rock and bruising blues. "Michael Shrieve's drum solo on 'Soul Sacrifice' was the moment where the band really won over the entire crowd," Lang reveals. "To be able to connect with a crowd of that size was a revelation to the band. A star was born."

Recorded live at the Woodstock music & art fair, Saturaday, August 16, 1969

Genre: Blues-Rock
Rate: 292 kbps VBR / 44100

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @allmusic.com

The J. Geils Band was one of the most popular touring rock & roll bands in America during the '70s. Where their contemporaries were influenced by the heavy boogie of British blues-rock and the ear-splitting sonic adventures of psychedelia, the J. Geils Band was a bar band pure and simple, churning out greasy covers of obscure R&B, doo wop, and soul tunes, cutting them with a healthy dose of Stonesy swagger.

Blues Company 2001 Two Nights Only

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:06:19
Size: 151,72 MB

This band is hot. Very, very hot.

And those aren't just empty words. After all, the Blues Company from Osnabrück, Germany is neither a hodgepodge of rank beginners nor – to borrow business lingo – a group of new business starters. Rather, they are a team of artists who have made their mark, musicians with experience and know-how aplenty. The musicians at work here have long since ensured that the name of their “company” is a recognised “seal of approval”. In a nutshell, “Blues Company” stands for German's longest-running and most successful blues band. And with each new recording, with each concert, these pros underscore that their passionate love affair with the blues is burning brightly as ever.

Has their playing become routine? Not a chance. Quite the contrary, as can be seen in the fruitful interplay between the performers and their enraptured public. This in turn energises the band, whose fans feast on a free-spirited performance of the music Blues Company lives and breathes.

Since the '60s, the blues have inspired practically every generation of enthusiastic young, white musicians. Blues Company itself hasn't been around quite that long. The band started up its blues crusade on 20th May 1976. That was the day they first climbed on stage to fire up the audience into a twelve-bar frenzy. After countless other live missions, they proudly celebrated their first 30 years in the spring of 2006.

Initially, Blues Company concerts were not just a mix of fun and hard work. They were pioneering events. Because until Blues Company came to be, blues in Germany – performed by professional bands – quite simply didn't exist. What did exist were tours by American blues greats, who often enjoyed higher esteem in Europe than in their homeland. The Blues Company musicians backed up many of these bluesmen at their concerts in Germany. Thus they not only got to know the old masters, they garnered the admiration of countless blues freaks. Since then, many a basement musician who's strapped on a guitar or settled down on a drum stool to indulge in the twelve-bar sound can thank the Blues Company for leading the way (far off over the German border, a young, very talented Blues guitarist from Hungary admitted that he was significantly influenced by this band, after hearing one of their concerts). Smokin' Joe Kubek & B'nois King 2008 Blood Brothers

Genre: Blues
Rate: 254 kbps VBR / 44100
Time: 01:00:25
Size: 110,02 MB

Review by Hal Horowitz

Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King have been slinging out no-nonsense, bar band-approved Texas blues-boogie since 1991. It's another hourlong set of tough, robust, Texas soul-blues that cruises along and occasionally shifts into overdrive. The John Lee Hooker slow swamp groove of "Stop Drinking" explodes into a guitar dual that's about as hot as they have gotten in the studio, and "Midlife Crisis, Midnight Flight" further elaborates about getting healthy in the coffeine, nicotine, and booze-filled world where they reside. But tunes like the "I'm a Man" rewrite entitled "That Ring Don't Mean a Thing" just sound like you have heard them before with different lyrics, which you have. While that's not unusual in the blues, at least the material is performed with gusto and energy. King's soulful vocals are distinctive throughout, adding a unique quality, and Kubek's licks always sting despite the rehashed approach. The hard rock of "Troubled Times" sounds close to old Bad Company and nudges them into slightly different waters. But generally this is another quality effort from the dependable Texas twosome who play to their impressive strengths, and is as good as any for newcomers to partake in their rootsy, rocking attack.

Cuby & Blizzards 1971 Simple Man

Genre: Blues-Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:33:56
Size: 77,65 MB

Biography by Richie Unterberger

Although unknown to the English-speaking market, Cuby & the Blizzards have been one of Holland's top blues bands since the mid-'60s. Some of their early singles had a beat/punk orientation, particularly "Stumble & Fall" and "Your Body Not Your Soul," both of which would be reissued on various Dutch beat compilations a few decades later. They quickly settled into a straighter blues groove, however. Their claims to fame in the larger rock/pop world are that they briefly backed Van Morrison in the gap between his departure from Them and the beginning of his solo career, although details of the association remain murky; also, at one point lead guitarist Eelco Gelling was asked to join John Mayall's Bluebreakers, although he declined.

Time: 00:48:09

From the churning opener ‘Road Fever’ to the burning closer ‘Stop, Drop And Roll’ this is high-energy blues all the way from the one-time guitarist for southern rockers Black Oak Arkansas - even the quieter numbers have a rich, full, BIG sound, courtesy of the production by the renowned Jim Gaines (Stevie Ray Vaughn, Luther Allison, and a whole host of others). Vocalist Larry Samford is as tough or tender as each song requires, the rhythm section kicks, laying down attractive, relentlessly grooving rhythms and Rocky can come over all over Albert King on a song such as ‘Last Of The Blues’, produce some suitably spooky playing on the title track or just blast away on the likes of ‘Ain’t No Doubt’.

Most definitely one for those moments when you want to throw your head back, holler out loud and just groove along to some good timin’, hard rockin’ blues. (Norman Darwen)

Dickey Betts & Great Southern 1977 Dickey Betts & Great Southern

Genre: Southern Rock
Rate: 256 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:34:46
Size: 63,60 MB

Review by Thom Jurek

Three years after the issue of his landmark solo recording, Highway Call (and countless inbred brawls and unholy wars among the Allman Brothers), guitarist, singer, and songwriter Dickey Betts released the debut by his "other" band, Great Southern. Attempting to capture the loose, easy feel of Highway Call and combine it with the more blues-driven sound of the Allmans, Betts was largely successful though the record does suffer a tad from overly slick production.

Evident from "Out to Get Me," the very first track, is Betts' trademark slide guitar burning a hole through the center of the mix. The undertone of the album is the shuffle, both country and blues, aided in large part by Topper Price's harmonica and the able second guitar of Dan Toler. But the feel is all Betts. He stretches out the stinging boogie of "Run Gypsy Run," with dual leads, a killer pre-verse riff, and a solid "Ramblin Man"-style melodic line in the heart of his blues. Perhaps the hinge piece on the album in on its third track, "Sweet Virginia" (not a cover of the Rolling Stones' track). Here, Betts' slide work is easily and lilting as it undergirds a sleepy country tune with a killer backbeat. Nostalgia, or at least the previous, is the backbone of Betts' sentiment as his vice rings through the guitars and rhythm section with conviction and a sureness that only comes out of the finest country-rock music (think Creedence Clearwater meets the Allmans).

Ultimately, this album, with its funky New Orleans basslines and second-line percussions, is another restless country-soul set from Betts. And though more guitar driven than Highway Call (fiddle god Vassar Clements is not Betts' foil here), its songs hold as much soul and aplomb if not the same deeply held convictions that made the previous album the classic it is. Nonetheless, Great Southern is a very fine album that despite its polish holds a wealth of fine songs and truly astonishing playing within its grooves.

Genre: Hard Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:12:13

Recorded in Montreux, Switzerland, in November 1973, BURN was the first album to feature the Mk 3 line-up of DEEP PURPLE, with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes joining the band. Released worldwide in February 1974, it went top ten in America and Britain. Many of the tracks went straight into the live set, and remain amongst the most popular the band has ever done. This remaster breathes new life into the studio material; the epic blues-based Mistreated, the soulful Sail Away, the inventive percussive drive of You Foot No One and Burn itself have never sounded better. Bonus material includes a rare guitar instrumental b-side, and four powerful new digital mixes from the 16 track masters.

Black Sabbath 1975 Asbury Park Convention Hall - NJ 05/08/75

Genre: Hard Rock

Time: 01:40:14
Size: 229,20 MB

Muthafucker. The best live recording of Black Sabbath from their glory days emerged on the internet only in 2001. It was a stereo soundboard recording that was made for broadcast on the popular ‘70s radio show, The King Biscuit Flower Hour. Recorded in August 1975 at the start of the Sabotage tour, the band was Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward. The original and best version of Black Sabbath.

Asbury Park was a triumph in many ways. Black Sabbath was different from the heavy bands of the ‘70s in that they traded in Satanic images and invited the glare of the guardians of public morality. Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were mild compared to the "hidden message" of Black Sabbath. The band don’t disappoint either.

Straight off you can hear Ozzy shout a couple of "fucks", hardly ever heard on a Led Zep, Uriah Heep, Free or Deep Purple concert from that period. For good measure, Ozzy even calls for a "muthafucker", something accepted in movies today and also in gangsta rap but this was ancient 1975 in Asbury Park, New Jersey, where Bruce Springsteen was honing his skill as the man born to run. By Ozzy’s own account, there were countless times they had a hard time while touring the American heartlands with an act that enraged Christians.

Tony Iommi lets rip on two long guitar solos, the extended Zabbra Cadabra [20 mins plus a Bill Ward solo] and the instrumental jam that includes Orchid and Rock ‘n’ Roll Doctor. Asbury Park also offers very tasty renditions of Black Sabbath classics War Pigs, Iron Man, Snowblind and Children of the Grave. Mostly the gig was to showcase their previous album Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and the new one, Sabotage, not yet released at the time of the concert.

Like proto-punks, Black Sabbath lyrically were anti-war and anti-authority. It is to their credit that they survived the ‘70s long enough to establish heavy metal as something beyond just loudness, guitar riffs and posing. Children of the Grave and War Pigs were message songs and Black Sabbath’s satanic image was a mirror that reflected the anti-war message. No other metal band from that period took such risks with message-laden songs.

Try to imagine wearing black in $ingapore, playing heavy metal and saying "muthafucker" on stage while playing anti-government songs and you will know what Black Sabbath had to go through for their music to be accepted. It’s a pleasure then to hear Ozzy work the crowd for the encore, a classic rendition of their only hit, Paranoid. (http://www.bigozine2.com)

Stormbringer Coming Your Way

Recorded in Munich in August 1974, Stormbringer was the second – and final – album from the Mk 3 line-up of Deep Purple. Building on the success of the preceding album Burn, and the months of touring during the year, the group began to take the music in a new and funkier direction, whilst retaining their trademark rock edge. Often overlooked at the time, this remaster includes the original album in full, along with a host of bonus material and several powerful brand new mixes from bassist Glenn Hughes done at Abbey Road especially for this release.

Rich Harper Blues Band 1997 Don't Think Just Play

Genre: Blues-Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:39:45
Size: 91,02 MB

United States

This debut from the Rich Harper Blues Band starts off with a punch, kicking into a high-energy groove that barely lets up until the last track. Harper's lead guitar work is solid throughout; his playing on "I Love the Woman" and "She's on Her Way Up" is particularly confident and evocative. While the band's cover of "The Thrill Is Gone" doesn't offer anything new in the way of interpretation, it's well played, and by the time the CD reaches "Hands Off" you get the sense that you've just spent the night in a particularly good, out-of-the-way blues club and that this is the last song. "Guitar Rag" seems to be almost an afterthought, what one might hear after the sound system's been turned off, the lights have come up, and the chairs are all back on the tables. (Genevieve Williams)

Product Description

Rich Harper learned to play blues guitar the traditional way by primarily being self-taught listening to and learning from the recordings of artists like Eric Clapton, B. B. King, Rory Gallagher, Freddy King, Duane Allman, and so on. Rich developed his own slide style using the same Coricidin medicine bottle as Duane Allman. After paying his "blues dues" in small blue collar towns throughout Pennsylvania, Rich moved to Los Angeles to gather like minded musicians and formed the Rich Harper Blues Band.

With the success of their debut CD, "Don't Think Just Play", the Rich Harper Blues Band was not only selected as one of Amazon.com's prestigious "Emerging New Blues Artists", but Taxim Records, a German label, joined the group's growing list of blues fans by placing another cut, "She's On Her Way Up", on their compilation album titled "More Desaster City Blues". It wasn't long before the band's name was popping up in blues magazines everywhere and blues societies were urging their members to check out the exciting new group who were carving out a unique niche for themselves in the blues world. By the time the band released their second CD, "Bottled Up Blues", Europe had jumped on board by making the band the #1 selling artists in Switzerland on Amazon's charts. Radio stations worldwide welcomed the new CD with open arms and this time one of the cuts, "As She Moved In (My Guitar Moved Out)", topped Rolling Stone Magazine's "MP3 & More Blues Chart" at #1. The international blues scene stood up, did a double take, and these talented artists haven't stopped since.

An international promoter recalls how he came across the band in the Los Angeles area a few years ago: "While walking past a local club at 4 o'clock on a Saturday afternoon, I heard the faint sounds of a band playing, and my curiosity dragged me in. Onstage were three guys playing great music I did not recognize. I sat down, ordered a beer and wondered why there was nobody there. Half an hour later people started coming in, and by 5:30 the place was packed. The music got louder, and Rich Harper, with his tremendous musical creativity and playfulness held a tight grip on the crowd as it got wilder, and it was an amazing experience - like nothing I had ever witnessed before. It turned out to be a 3-7 pm Saturday gig, except the audience demanded an extra half set. I said to myself that music lovers around the world deserve to experience this!"

Since then, the band has toured the world, including their adoptive countries of Scandinavia, and such exotic locales as Asia and Australia. They were also humbled and extremely honored to be part of a group that entertained the U.S. troops in Iraq in 2004.

The Beat Daddys 1992 No We Ain't From Clarksdale

Biography by Richard Skelly

An amalgamation of blues and Southern rock, the Beat Daddys are comprised of Lewis Ross (drums), Brill Morris (bass and vocals), Larry Grisham (guitar, harp and vocals), and Britt Meacham (guitar and vocals). Meacham, from Mobile, Alabama, was a member of Jackson Highway, a group that recorded for Capitol Records, and also toured with soul-blues man Little Milton Campbell. Bassist Morris was part of Mercury Records' David and the Giants and performed in a popular regional Gulf Coast band, Magik. Drummer Ross, also from Mobile, was a founding member of Wet Willie, and he was involved in co-writing the band's hits "Keep on Smilin'," "Red Hot Chicken" and "Macon Hambone Blues."

The Beat Daddys formed in Evansville, Indiana in the mid-1980s and released their own self-produced album before signing with Malaco Records. Their two mid-1990s Malaco/Waldoxy releases, No, We Ain't From Clarksdale and South to Mississippi, are not straight-ahead blues, to be sure, but fans of blues, roots-rock and Southern rock can find much to appreciate in either of them.
