Stevie Zee 2004 Caballero

Album Notes

Here it is... at last! The long awaited new album by the Zeeman that captures much of the magic and spontaneity of his live shows and arrives drenched in his sometimes subtle, sometimes gut wrenching and jaw dropping but always tasteful guitar work. Stevie spent the best part of the nineties in the U.S. based out of Portland, Oregon moving back to London, England in '96. In 2001 after more than four years of touring England, Ireland, France and Spain and having already started work in England on an album of original Zee tunes provisionally entitled 'Blue' Stevie decided to move to Madrid, Spain where he is now based because as he explains: "I had itchy feet, I needed a change of scene and I'd always wanted to learn to speak spanish.... I'd always thought of Spain as a very romantic place since my childhood and of course it doesn't rain as much as in England!" After gathering together a great little band of top class spanish R&B musicians he decided spontaneously to cut an album, "Because I knew I had the ingredients and I wanted to capture the vibe of the band by recording some tunes in Box Studio which is one of the top analog studios here in Madrid... and it was an opportunity to invite some of the best blues musicians I'd met and played with since moving to Spain." The title of the album 'Caballero' came naturally according to Stevie, "It's kind of like a souvenir of the amazing times I've had travelling and playing here and that's also what they happen to call me around these parts. Things are going well and I've had the opportunity to open for both Johnny Winter and John Mayall recently as part of their European tours."

On this new disc Stevie proudly displays his blues roots and finally responds to endless requests for him to record a few of his favourite blues songs by some of the artists that have influenced and inspired him over the years.

Stevie opens up the album with a daring up-tempo version of 'The Sky Is Crying' going straight for the jugular with his trademark rocking blues strat+wah sound. The guitar man follows up with a Dobro version of Sunnyland Slim's blues classic 'Highway 61' and featuring top Spanish blues harp virtuoso Ñaco Goñi. Next cut Stevie and the band tear through another cranked up version of a blues classic by Jimmy Reed, Stevie shows off his superb slippery slide work and winds up trading licks with Ñaco's harp 'live' in the studio. 'Painted Angel' is a melodic masterpiece of acoustic and electric guitars, piano, percussion and harmony vocals that showcases Stevie's songwriting talents beyond the twelve bar blues format. Then he boldly takes on Jimi's 'Red House' a sizzling slow blues impassioned with breathtaking blues chops and dynamic control. Mister Zee is king of the blues shuffle and sure knows how to swing hard... and his rendition of the 'T-Bone Shuffle' is no exception as he steers the band through a rousing version of the classic T-Bone Walker tune. Wheeling out a scintillating version of Jeff Healey's 'Can You See The Light' Stevie Zee nods his hat to one of his finest contemporaries. But this unique version takes the song even further out into the strato-sphere with solos round the entire band and an ending to make your toes curl! 'If you Love Me' is a song that has also been in the Zee repertoire for many years, Stevie takes the opportunity to enjoy a lengthy guitar workout bookending the song with some familiar Freddie King riffs. To round off the new disc the Zeeman treats us to a couple of original tunes guaranteed to rock your socks off, 'Stone Cold Valentine' a raunchy and atmospheric instrumental will have you in a cold sweat and before you have time to recover he delivers the final punch with 'Sorry Some Day' a knockout up tempo boogie in which Stevie becomes three different guitar players trading choruses with himself and showing unquestionably what a master stylist he is... leaving us breathless but smiling.

So here it is folks, the latest bloozed out offering from cult blues rocker Stevie Zee. It's been a while but our Caballero finally delivers the goods. The odyssey continues...

From the rural hometown settings of Hamel, Minnesota and the river banks of Minneapolis/St. Paul, the blues influence surfaced as early as the mid 1960's for what was to become "The Lamont Cranston Blues Band". Another batch of solid roots rock songs from the Hoopsnakes. Like most bar bands, the group has a tendency to get silly and corny, "It Ain't Easy Bein' Me" and "Blues Attack" being prime examples, just one listen to the sweeping slide guitar in "Devil Comes Knockin'" or the singalong chorus of "One Good Reason" kind of makes you wish you were in the crowded audience, surrounded by cigarette smoke and cheap beer. An attraction that, after all, is the mark of a good bar band.

Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, Zito was immersed in the gritty sounds of the south side that would unknowingly become the groundwork of his future in music. Like the legends before him, music has coursed through his veins from the early age of five, when he began singing and performing. It didn’t take long for him to discover his instrument of choice – electric guitar – after receiving a Van Halen record for his birthday. His education and journey were just starting – little did he know he would find himself among such legends at a local guitar shop just out of high school. “Everyone from Chuck Berry to Bennie Smith came in that store,” Zito shares of his experience. “I soaked up the sounds of that store and began building my own style.”

Zito’s journey took off at the age of 19, when he busted into the local St. Louis music scene, developing his sound even further from the stage. His first independent release arrived in 1996, titled “Blue Room” which included raw and funky songs “Hollywood” and “Pull the Trigger”. (http://www.myspace.com/mikezito5150)

One of their most focused efforts; the band is in rare form, the material is top-notch, and the songs are filled with great guitar hooks. On the title track, "Can't Seem to Stop Myself," and "Wound Up," guitarist Charlie Bingham comes as close in inspiration and inventiveness to the great riff-master Keith Richards as one possibly can without sounding like an imitator. With guitar this mean and songs this good, Jump In & Hang On is definitely one of the group's best albums.

Richard Newell 1987 A.K.A. King Biscuit Boy

Genre: Blues
Rate: 160 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:42:31
Size: 48,68 MB

Biography

Born Richard Newell, 9 March 1944, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, d. 5 January 2003, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Blues harpist and vocalist Newell aka King Biscuit Boy will be remembered as one of his country's finest unsung musicians. Newell began playing harp at the age of 12, and made his recording debut in 1961 with the rock 'n' roll group the Barons on the "Bottleneck" single.

Various name changes ensued, with the band performing their increasingly blues-orientated material as Son Richard And The Chessmen and Son Richard And The Gooduns, but despite a popular live following a series of failed record deals led to them calling it a day in 1965.

Newell joined Richie Knight And The Mid-Knights, recording a cover version of Sam And Dave's "Soul Man' before being poached by Canadian rock 'n' roll legend Ronnie Hawkins. The Hawk gave Newell his popular sobriquet (from the KFFA Arkansas radio programme King Biscuit Boy Flower Hour), and introduced him to venues that far outsized the bar circuit he was used to.

Newell left Hawkins in 1970, recruiting drummer Sonnie Bernardi and keyboard player Jozef Chirowski (aka Crowbar) to record Official Music for Daffodil Records. Despite warm reviews for the album Newell moved on once more, reviving the Gooduns name for a solitary album before launching a solo career.

He relocated to New Orleans to work with songwriter/record producer Allen Toussaint and the Meters on the excellent King Biscuit Boy, which was released in 1974 by Epic Records. A follow-up album was not forthcoming until 1980, when Mouth Of Steel appeared on the tiny UK label Red Lightning.

Further releases dripped out over the years, including 1987's Juno nominated King Biscuit Boy Aka Richard Newell and 1995"s Urban Blues Re: Newell. Newell, who had suffered from alcohol problems throughout his life, was found dead at his house in Hamilton in January 2003. Review by William Ruhlmann

Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Matt "Guitar" Murphy, "Blue Lou" Marini, and Alan "Mr. Fabulous" Rubin were all members of the all-star band that backed John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd in their Blues Brothers incarnation between 1978 and 1980. Here, they reorganized with a few more players, notably singer Larry "T" Thurston, as the Blues Brothers Band. The music (mostly new songs) was in the Blues Brothers' familiar up-tempo R&B style, Elwood Blues made a cameo appearance, and the playing was session-man-hot, but of course it just wasn't the same without Joliet Jake, who had gone to that great roadhouse in the sky ten years before.

Rare Earth 1971 In Concert

Genre: R&B
Rate: 192 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:14:00
Size: 101,48 MB

Review by Bruce Eder

The performances from which this album is comprised must have been an embarrassment of riches. That's one way of explaining how this live double-LP set came to be released -- that and the fact that Rare Earth's peak years coincided with the commercial heyday of the live album. Whatever the reason, Rare Earth in Concert was the most expansive live recording ever issued by Motown Records. What's more, it all works in terms of being an honest representation of this band -- not that they compromised much in the studio, where their rendition of "Get Ready" ran 20 minutes, but playing to an audience was what they'd been about from the start, and everything here resonates with the joy of that process.

And in addition to capturing the band in top form, the recording itself provided a beautifully vivid sound picture, every instrument and voice captured spot-on, all the more amazing considering the size of this band and the complexities of their sound -- flutes, guitars (acoustic and electric), keyboards, saxes, percussion, and more are all here in close detail, but nothing more solid in the mix than John Persh's lead bass work in the middle section of the 23-and-a-half-minute "Get Ready." Their reshaping of "What'd I Say" also works well as a concert number, and pretty much everything here is a joyous celebration of what this band and their era were about -- the group-credited jam "Thoughts" isn't the most interesting moment here, but it does avoid the pitfalls of the most excessive work of its period and can sustain its ten-minute length without trouble. The passage of time has also allowed one to appreciate the full technical range of this record -- by 1971, live recording had become so sophisticated that the producers were even able to give an expansive stereo sound picture, which came out well on the vinyl and is even better on the CD reissue, for those lucky enough to be able to find the latter. (And if the multi-tracks have survived intact, this would make one amazing multi-channel SACD/hybrid).

United States

When Bill Blue (Yup,that's his real name) went to Virginia to meet blues great Arthur (Big Boy) Crudup, writer of Elvis's first record "That's Alright Mama'', little did he know that he would go from a struggling out of work musician to being on the road with Big Boy on Bonnie Raitt first US tour. That started a career that has lasted over 30 years and taken Bill Blue to stages all over the world playing shows with the likes of ZZ Top, BB King, Bonnie Raitt, Allman Bros. ,Albert King, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, Hank Williams Jr., Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, John Prine just to name a few.

After releasing two albums "Indian Summer Blues" and "Street Preacher" on the Richmond, Va. based Feather Records, Bill signed with the prestigious Adelphi Records, one of the best blues labels in the US with worldwide distribution releasing "Sing Like Thunder" and "Giving Good Boy's A Bad Name". This gave him the exposure to play venues all over Europe and the US. After years of touring Bill moved to Key West, Fl in the 80's while still keeping an active touring schedule he became a mainstay playing all the Key West joints, Sloppy Joe's, Hogs Breath Saloon, The Green Parrot Bar and the Full Moon Saloon where he recorded the very popular live CD "Live On The Moon".

These days Bill has gone back to his roots playing acoustic get down blues on his collection of vintage acoustic and resonator guitars solo and with a trio at festivals in the US and Europe. As a New York Times reviewer said about one of Bill's shows in New York City "One moment you are laughing your butt off, and a few songs later you're crying in your beer; from a songwriter, you can't ask for anything more." Seeing Frank Marino live is an experience that you will not soon forget, but not because your ears are permanentely damaged, but because you can witness the raw power and seering guitar licks first hand.

This album captures Frank in his element where he shines the brightest. His versions of Moore's "I'm A King Bee" and Hendrix's "Purple Haze" bring down the house. My favorite song off this record is by far "Johnny B. Goode", where his guitar shredding surpassess all who came before and covered this classic blues tune. This is a must own record. Free 1973 Heartbreaker Remaster

Genre: Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:35:52
Size: 82,02 MB

Review by Dave Thompson

Free's return in 1972 was scarred by any number of traumas, not least of all the departure of bassist Andy Fraser and the virtual incapacity of guitarist Paul Kossoff -- one-half of the original band, and the lion's share of its spirit as well. But did their erstwhile bandmates let it show? Not a jot. The hastily recruited Tetsu Yamauchi, and vocalist Paul Rodgers himself, filled the breach instrumentally, and probably 50 percent of the ensuing Heartbreaker ranks among Free's finest ever work. Of course, any record that can open with the sheer majesty of "Wishing Well," Rodgers' so-evocative tribute to Kossoff, is immediately going to ascend to the halls of greatness, all the more so since Kossoff himself is in such fine form across both this cut and the next three -- completing side one of the original vinyl, "Come Together in the Morning," "Travellin' in Style," and "Heartbreaker" add up to the band's most convincing sequence of songs since the days of Fire and Water. Further into the disc, two contributions from another new recruit, keyboard player John Bundrick, fall a little flat, a fate they share with the previously unreleased "Hand Me Down/Turn Me Round," one of the 2002 remaster's six bonus tracks. But a pair of solo Rodgers songs, "Easy on My Soul" and "Seven Angels," close the album with as much emotion as it opened on, and one could well argue that, after such a treat, the aforementioned bonus tracks are all but unnecessary, especially as the first few simply offer outtakes, alternates, and B-sides from the sessions themselves. As the CD wraps up, however, two final tracks reveal what happened once the album was completed, peeping into the band's rehearsal room on the eve of their summer tour of Japan to catch "Heartbreaker" and "Easy on My Soul" in such rough but eloquently heavenly form that this most emotionally weighted of Free's albums could demand no deeper coda.

The Yardbirds 2008 Live At B.B. King's Blues Club

Genre: Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:19:01
Size: 180,66 MB

Review by Bruce Eder

Anyway you slice it, the Yardbirds are one kick-ass band on-stage, and here they mostly do more than re-enact 1960s-era triumphs in a live setting. Even some of the lesser new material off of the new album, such as Chris Dreja's bluesy dirge "My Blind Life" and the shapeless "Mr. Saboteur," is much more worthwhile in its presentation here; indeed, "Mr. Saboteur" becomes the basis for a great workout on the instrumental break. And the better numbers off of that record, such as Jim McCarty's "Crying out for Love" and "Please Don't Tell Me 'Bout the News," are also given fine airings here, in what ought to be considered their definitive presentations. Of course, any release of this kind is going to rest on its vintage repertory -- the band alternates between new and old across their set, and the new stuff is worth hearing, even if not all of it is as intrinsically memorable as the old songs. And of necessity, most of their worth, like much of this band's work, stand or fall on the contributions of new members John Idan (lead vocals), Billy Boy Miskimmin (harmonica), and Ben King (lead guitar).

As it happens, they do acquit themselves admirably -- Idan, who also plays bass, bears an uncanny resemblance to Keith Relf vocally, so that it seems like he's channeling the late singer even on the new numbers; and Miskimmin takes the harmonica breaks to places that Relf (who suffered from a collapsed lung at one point) couldn't always go. As for King, he adds his own flourishes to the numbers that can take them, and they're welcome -- this isn't like listening to a Yardbirds jukebox, is what we mean. Dreja's rhythm guitar work is better represented here than it was on some of the group's live broadcasts of the '60s, and Jim McCarty plays like this is 1966, not 40 years after 1966. "Shapes of Things" might be the one impossible spot in the group's set, as it is competing not only with the Yardibrds' original single but also with Jeff Beck's subsequent remake -- the re-formed group couldn't skip it, as the song looms too large in their history to neglect it; but apparently, they chose to completely ignore the reality of Beck's later version; Idan handles it as though Beck and Rod Stewart never pushed it over the line into pure heavy metal, and the rendition here ends up being the one place on this CD where one feels the performance is a slavish re-creation. Otherwise, they do put enough energy and sufficient new flourishes into it so that numbers such as "Rack My Mind" and "Over Under Sideways Down" are extended into shapes the original band didn't try for. In the midst of those vintage songs, one Box of Frogs number -- "Back Where I Started" -- proves just about their equal as a vehicle for some extended jamming. They also make "For Your Love" roll convincingly into "Still I'm Sad" into "Dazed and Confused," leading to a finale of "I'm a Man" (which one wishes were fully expanded here, the way it was on the Anderson Theater live album) into "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago." The latter song has shown astonishing durability given its disappointing performance as a single in 1966 -- as a big finish, it's a surprising choice, and this version of the band does about as well as the original group did with it on-stage back when. The sound is first-rate throughout, and the booklet includes lyrics and some annotation, though one wishes there were more said about the specific date represented.

Their fifth album in a three-year span, Willie Remembers, is one of the more refined releases by Rare Earth -- not as spotty as the previous discs that contained their hits and far better than their late-'70s work.

Luther Allison 1997 Where Have You Been - Live In Montreux 1976-1994

Genre: Blues

Review by Scott Yanow

Where Have You Been? Live in Montreux 1976-1994 features the exciting blues guitarist/singer Luther Allison on selections taken from four appearances at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Although the title says 1974-1994, the earliest numbers are actually from 1976, and these are the most memorable cuts on the CD. Even when sticking to cover tunes throughout the powerhouse performance (such as "Sweet Home Chicago" and "Little Red Rooster"), Allison plays with such enthusiasm and ferocity that he sounds as if he wrote the songs himself.

Among the other highlights, Allison is heard on his 1983 set closer "Sky Is Crying," shouting out a Memphis soul-type ballad ("Memories") in 1984 and sounding remarkably close to B.B. King at times during 1994's "Bad Love" (which has background riffs from the Memphis Horns). This is a strong (and easily recommended) all-around overview that can serve as a perfect introduction to the talented Luther Allison.

Stan Webb's Chicken Shack 1995 Stan 'The Man' Live

Genre: Blues-Rock

Time: 01:06:16
Size: 151,53 MB

Album-Notes:

The thing about Stan and the blues, is that, as much as he loves the music, he never treats it like fine porcelain. As far as he's concerned, it's not something to be preserved in air-conditioned isolation, it's for hefting and testing in front of an audience. To pay the music it's proper respect, you shouldn't respect it's conventions so much that you inhibit your own inspiration.

Ever since I first saw him at the Windsor Jazz Festival all those years ago, I've never seen Stan hold anything back on stage. He's one of the most inspirational musicians I know, capable of delicate and intricate phrasing and explosive, plectrum-melting virtuosity - sometimes in the course of one four-bar sequence. All delivered in an individual, instantly recognizable style.

Much of what Stan does on stage was refined through his friendship with Freddie King. Not just guitar technique but stage presence and the image a leader projects to his audience. 'Freddie was the best', he announces with a broad grin. 'He was great at doing weird little timings in his solos and playing across the time. He taught me a lot. He used to say, you've got to put your notes in the right place. He said, try and think. It might take you years. Now, after all these years, everything has slotted into place'.

Like his mentor, Stan's got one of the most unique blues voices, put all that together on stage and you have a gourmet recipe to satisfy the hungriest blues gourmand. He's made some damn fine records over the years, but none of them fully captures what Stan portrays on stage. 'I sing a million per cent better now than I ever did in the early days', he says. 'My voice has got stronger. I'm very conscientious about what I do when I'm on stage now'. But not too conscientious. 'To this day, I can't be serious. I think this total seriousness about blues is hilarious. Freddy King wasn't like that. He was serious when he was playing but as soon as he was off the stage, he was just up for a laugh. That was it, job done'.

Stan and his band comprehensively get the job done on this live recording. Music-making of this quality comes at a price and Stan keeps on paying it. One day, he'll receive the acclaim he deserves. Let's help him achieve it.

Henrik Freischlader Band 2008 Live

Genre: Blues

Time: 02:52:25
Size: 394,33 MB

Within 3 years, Henrik Freischlader celebrated 3 successful CD releases and over 500 concerts, which catapulted him to the top of the Blues scene. As some music critics prophesized at the beginning of his career, Henrik is now exactly where he always wanted to be. Blues is his language, a living form for expressing pain and sorrow, anger and rage, humor and happiness, through which he offers the faithful and thankful audience a new inside into the virtuosity of his seemingly limitless musical abilities.

Numerous appearances with blues legends such as Peter Green, Johnny Winter and Joe Bonamassa have introduced Henrik Freischlader to a larger audience. However, it was at the small concerts in front of a smaller audience, which could be jam-packed and intense, where the "blues-spark" connected him with his audience.

No wonder then that this "spark" has carried on, and the status of his concerts as an "insider tip" has gotten more and more blues fans even outside of Germany interested. As a consequence, a faithful fan base in France, Poland, Luxembourg, Austria and Switzerland. The requests for shows have multiplied and it will be exciting to see where Henrik Freischlader and his band will be playing in the future. (http://www.myspace.com/henrikfreischlader)

Miller Anderson's vocals are outstanding. Steady rhythm from Hartley and Thain under some nice edgy guitar licks from Spit James and Anderson. Excellent keyboards and brass accents (flugel horns sound great). A combination of Blues, Rock and Jazz with emphasis on Blues and Rock. There is even a mellow side which explores Anderson's vocal range on "Don't give up". The flute part in "Hickory" reminds me a little of Tower of Power's "Sparking in the Sand". If you like John Mayall, you'll probably like this too. (amazon.com)

Biography

An unusual late-'60s band that combined horn-embellished soul-rock with more interesting material utilizing jazz-colored arrangements and somewhat spacy songwriting. There were few parallels for this kind of thing at the time, other than perhaps the only slightly less obscure Insect Trust. A minor group, but at their best an intriguing one.

Bas Paardekooper & The Blew Crue 2008 Hang On To Tomorrow

Genre: Blues
Rate: 160 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:30:47
Size: 35,19 MB

Biography

At the age of eleven, twenty-two years after the death of the phenomenal guitar-player Jimi Hendrix, Bas Paardekooper was struck by the sound of ‘Hey Joe' coming out of his grandma's stereo. Bas immediately took up his guitar and made an arrangement to this classic song, which had just opened the door to his musical career. Fed by records, cassette tapes, video's and, not in the last place, the musical environment of the Paardekooper family, Bas mastered the basics of Blues and Rock guitar. Soon his feeling for the instrument and his pleasure in playing made him well-known in the neighbourhood and it did not take long before he started performing on stage with fellow musicians. When he was fifteen years old, the Living Blues legend Ted Oberg heard him play and decided to take Bas under his musical wings for a time to develop his Blues-play.

After he finished school, Bas and a few former class mates formed a band called Blue Illusions. In this setting he mainly played old Rock and Blues covers. El Diablo followed later on, a four-men band, based on the hard Blues-rock style. To add new styles to his guitar-playing technique, Bas entered the (commercial) cover circuit and became an all-round guitar- player for a while in the bands Tjeez and Ramble. After a lot of practicing and playing, a period of complete musical rest set in. When he met all-round musician Wouter Hoek after a time, who encouraged him to pick up playing, Bas at first joined several jam sessions before playing in a band called React.

Bas Paardekooper and the Blew Crue made their first official appearance in 2007, although most members of the band had already been playing together in different settings.

Members of the band are:

Bas Paardekooper (Guitar and vocals)
René Mijnten (Bass and vocals)
Roel van Leeuwen(Drums and vocals)
Wouter Hoek (Keys and vocals)

Being inspired by Steve Ray Vaughan, Walter Trout and Jimi Hendrix their style can be best described as American Blues-Rock. The repertoire is heavy at times, but contains some beautiful ballads as well. All compositions are self made, forming a perfect basis for the spectacular and surprising guitar-sound of Bas Paardekooper. (http://www.baspaardekooper.com/)
