James & Lucky Peterson 2004 If You Can't Fix It

Time: 00:50:31

James & Lucky Peterson's If You Can't Fix It is the first full-length collaboration by the father and son bluesmen. Neither man overshadows the other, as they take turns showcasing their own songs and each man's uniformly fine guitar playing. The best track by far is James' fiery "Cripple Man," one of his most passionate and driven performances in years, on a song that has the potential to become a modern Chicago-style blues standard. Lucky's standout is the epic "Too Young to Die," which evolves into an extended guitar duel between father and son.

Album Notes

From the coal enriched foothills of the Appalachian Mountains to the white sands of the Florida coast, The Buck 'n' Wing Band have, for 3 decades, been carving out a name for themselves in the entertainment world. Having already developed a strong following in areas from Cleveland, Ohio to central Florida and parts in between, The Buck 'n' Wing Band continues to gain support wherever they perform.

The Buck 'n' Wing band, consisting of frontman/guitarist Paul Gillespie, bassist Ray Mlynek, and drummer Mark Gray, have known one another musically since high school and have developed a bond to hold their new precise sound. "We are trying to capture the original Buck 'n' Wing sound, but yet add a new exciting flavor to the mix," says Paul.

The band has solidified and broadened their sound even further with the discovery of Danny Wells, an accomplished musician and guitarist from the Ohio Valley. Rounding out the lineup of this group of talented musicians is Bobby Bandonee on keyboard and vocals and Phil Wakulchik on guitar.

The Buck 'n' Wing Band have shared the stage with some of the country's top performers, such as Hank Williams, Jr., Charlie Daniels, George Jones, Brenda Lee, among others. They had the opportunity to headline Jamboree USA and also performed at the annual Ohio Valley festival known as Jamboree in the Hills. The band acquired national prominence when they were endorsed by the Kramer Guitar Company of Neptune, New Jersey, which earned them a write up in Guitar Player Magazine.

Recording for the first album was done at Capricorn Studios in Macon, Georgia. Because of the influence of bands such as The Allman Brothers Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, and The Charlie Daniels Band, they were dubbed "The Charlie Tucker Brothers" by the Capricorn Studios' Staff.

Over a period of 17 years, the band raised thousands of dollars for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by holding an annual music festival known as the Buck 'n' Wing Pick-Nic, which brought fine entertainment to the Ohio Valley during the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

The Buck 'n' Wing Band has no doubts that its future will be anything but bright. The most important task ahead for them is to reach as many people as possible. With original songs such as "Georgia Bound," "Lonesome Whistle," "Heaven (What I Call My Mountain Home)," and "In a Month or So," everyone who hears them will have no doubt that they have heard a very special band.

Biography by Richard Skelly

Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Johnny Jenkins may have had a long pause between records, but his heart, ears, and mind were always close to blues music. Jenkins never wanted to be a professional musician, and always worked day jobs, including digging wells, logging, and mechanical work. Jenkins' style is, at times, reminiscent of Elmore James, and at other times one can hear echoes of Jimi Hendrix in his guitar playing -- probably because Jenkins was a seminal influence on Hendrix.

Russia

Biography:

Based in Yekaterinburg (Russia), this electric blues trio is one of the hottest blues acts in Russia now. Raw sound and full contact with the audience make every their gig a 100%, uncompromising blues show. So, blues brothers and sisters, if you see BLUES DOCTORS in the club or festival schedule, be sure - you'll get a good shot of blues power!

The band was formed in 1998 by Vladimir Demyanov (guitars & vox) and his schoolmates: Michael Vasiliev on drums, Roman Imashev on keyboards and Evgeny Rinkevitch on bass. Influenced by music of BB King, Luther Allison, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter and many other blues and rock greats, musicians started to play electric blues. In 2002 musicians decided to name their band BLUES DOCTORS. 2002-2004: BLUES DOCTORS successfully performed at all major blues festivals and clubs in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and all over the country and became very popular on Russian blues music scene. In 2004 the band has released first CD - “BLUES DOCTORS” at "Mysteria Zvuka" - one of the biggest Russian record labels.

In 2005 there was the year of changes for BLUES DOCTORS. From soft and a little bit “academic” approach to the sound they turned to more rocking side of the blues music and classic power trio format. So, since 2005 BLUES DOCTORS are: Vladimir Demyanov – guitars/vox, Vladimir “Bob” Apanitsyn – bass/vox and Ilya Lyudevig on drums. In 2008 the BLUES DOCTORS began to work with Konstantin Plotcky who became bands manager and soundman. This cooperation brought the band to the next level.

Hard working on musical skills, sound of the band, the show and steady gigging at clubs, festival stages and concert halls of Russia and Ukraine has opened a new horizon: famous jazz piano player and producer Daniel Kramer invited them to play at blues festival “Big City Blues” at Yekaterinburg. Mr. Kramer joined the band on stage for a 30 minutes jam and gave a couple of very helpful advices.

In February 2009, BLUES DOCTORS due to invitation from Russian blues promoters played as the backing band for Keith Dunn - blues singer, harp player and brilliant showman from Rotterdam (Netherlands) at gigs in Yekaterinburg during his Russian tour. It was unique music experience because of the fact that Keith plays blues in old Chicago '50 style and BLUES DOCTORS have more blues/rock oriented sound. Playing with Keith inspired the band to make an acoustic record and in December 2009, BLUES DOCTORS have released EP "Acoustic Gentlemen".

In 2010 BLUES DOCTORS played together with Nicole Fournier (USA) and her band, played as backing band for American singer and showman Alvon Johnson. In September 2010 BLUES DOCTORS became founders and co-producers of blues festival “Big City Blues II” in Yekaterinburg and Ufa.

BLUES DOCTORS played together with Ana Popovic (USA), Marc Ford (USA), Jimmy D. Lane, Nazareth, Keith Dunn (USA/Netherlands), BB & The Blues Shacks (Germany), Kid Andersen (Norway/USA), Arsen Shomakhov (RU/Canada).

Freddie King 1973 Woman Across The River

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:39:07
Size: 89,46 MB

Review by Richie Unterberger

King's last Shelter album was his most elaborately produced, with occasional string arrangements and female backups vocals, although these didn't really detract from the net result. Boasting perhaps heavier rock elements than his other Shelter efforts, it was characteristically divided between blues standards (by the likes of Willie Dixon and Elmore James), Leon Russell tunes, and more R&B/soul-inclined material by the likes of Ray Charles and Percy Mayfield.

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:55:24
Size: 126,74 MB

Album Notes

Roach's rich soprano can ascend in a heartbeat from a meow to a whorehouse mama's bellow without sacrificing accuracy or nuance. Her purrs smolder with pent-up power; her midrange belting is whiskey-coarse but unerringly melodic; even her most audacious upper-register shreiks sound unforced. Like a Jazz singer, she often sound as if she's thinking in triplets; even when she's bucking a thunderous shuffle or rock 'n' roll boogie, she'll dip insinusting in to whatever spaces she can find between the beats, then grab the rhythm again and ride it, wailing and testifying to it's conclusion. On their most recent release, Blues and all the Rest, Roach sounds more torrid than ever. The most riviting track "Something Down", is a country-folk lament with Memphis overtones that masterfully involks the existential displacement of true heartbreak. Roach's voice starts out silky, slowly aquires a wounded edge, and ultimately explodes into a wail of desolation past caring. (Chicago Reader)

The guitarists are Peter Damman (Paul Delay Band), Josh Fulero (Curtis Salgado Band), Lloyd Jones (Lloyd Jones Struggle) , Monti Amundson (Blubinos) and on the bass Boyd's long time groove partner Willy Barber who has played and still plays with them all.

This recording is Boyd Small at his best. Singing lead and playing drums on all the songs while directing the band through a live session of freshly penned originals and covering a few of his favourites never before captured so brilliantly.

Muddy Waters 1969 Fathers & Sons

Review by James Chrispell

Put blues legends Muddy Waters and Otis Spann together in a recording studio with young upstarts such as Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, Buddy Miles, amongst others, and hope that the magic will flow. On Fathers and Sons it does, and then some. Originally a two-record set now pared down to one CD, Fathers and Sons displays the love that these musicians shared for the blues and the care they put into getting that feeling down on tape. Standout cuts include "Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had," "I'm Ready," and "Standing 'Round Cryin'," which Eric Clapton covered in 1994. The live concert is loose and funky with everyone getting in their licks, especially Muddy Waters, who shines throughout. A fine touchstone for anyone looking into Chicago blues and generally good music.

Biography:

He has been active in the Japanese blues and jazz scene since the early 1970s. In 1972, he formed the West Road Blues Band in Kyoto along with vocalist Takashi "Hotoke" Nagai, guitarist Shinji Shiotsugu, bassist Tadashi Kobori, and drummer Teruo Matsumoto. The band soon became one of the main acts in then thriving blues scene in the Kansai region.

In 1975, Yamagishi went on to join a soul band named So Bad Revue, and in 1979, he released the first album under his name titled Really?!.[1]

During the 1980s, he played with bands Myx and Chickenshack (a Japanese band different from the British one) and in the 1990s, he formed the Band of Pleasure with guitarist David T. Walker and drummer James Gadson and released three albums before they disbanded.

In 1995, Yamagishi left his well-established career behind in Japan to live in New Orleans where he still lives today. Since he found his home in the Crescent City, he has played with musicians including Earl King, Henry Butler, Davell Crawford, Marva Wright, George Porter, Jr. among many others aside from the two groups he has been a member of.

In 2007, he reunited with West Road Blues Band guitarist Shinji Shiotsugu to record Together Again - Blues in New Orleans. It is an all blues album recorded in New Orleans with support from the local musicians including John Gros and Marva Wright. (Wikipedia)
