Genre: Blues-Rock

United Kingdom

review by Peter Kurtz

A somewhat atypical debut rock release. Not only does the band deliver a soulful rendition of "Fool on the Hill," but the dreaded side-long track makes its appearance on side two of Stone the Crows. The tune is titled "I Saw America," and it pulls together the rock, blues, and soul elements that were splintered up on the first side. A spirited attempt was made to live up to the grandiose title, and there's some confident guitar by Les Harvey.

Creepy Lane 1978 Let The Rebels Rock

Genre: Southern Rock
Rate: 192 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:37:50
Size: 51,97 MB

Germany

It was the end of the 70ties and we just had dealt with the Sex Pistols, when there came a small band from Munich-Pasing and played almost exactly the same sound which was on the first two Molly Hatchet albums. And this band had its own songs!

I don't know anymore how any times I've seen them live. Five, maybe ten times, but oh man, this band raised hell. Guitar duels, boogie and classic southern rock, all the songs played as hard as the hardest songs of their American idols.

Creepy Lane is the name of this band and a couple of thousands of fans from the Munich area gave everything (even their last mark for a train ticket to the next gig), but the band split before the expected break through.

The LP was titled 'Let the rebels rock', released on the Zyx Records label and was even mixed in Jacksonville (Fl) and with hindsight the record had only one weak point : the vocals were too thin. Anyway, Robert Stragalinos may be as old as I am, which means that his voice hadn't broken at the time. For the rest, the record contains some great double leads and fine rock songs.

Songs like 'black friend', 'Dixie talkin' or 'round up' haven't found in Germany - nor elsewhere - their match. Even the obligatory Free bird plagiarism as in the song 'The dirty deal' sounds extraordinarily unsentimental since there are extremely beautiful, hard rocking guitar riffs and solo's that you wish never to end. Fifth On The Floor 2007 The Color Of Whiskey

Genre: Southern Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:33:48
Size: 77,32 MB

United States

Fifth on the Floor hails from Lexington, Kentucky and started out like all good bands do: on a Friday night over a bottle of Jim Beam. After a few weeks of song writing, line-up changes, and hangovers, the grouping of Chris Collins, Robin Polly, Matty Rodgers, and Justin Wells solidified the group dynamic and sound that are instantly identifiable.

Less than a month after inception, Fifth on the Floor were hitting venues all over Kentucky. Soon after, the band was rocking stages in Virginia, Tennessee, Illinois, and Ohio. The songs that developed were recorded on Fifth on the Floor’s debut album, "The Color of Whiskey". The release is as much a melting pot of American music as the band itself, with songs ranging from honky-tonk to southern jam to hard rock, and everything in between. "The Color of Whiskey" is as unabashedly raw and straight-forward as Fifth on the Floor’s live show.

With the 2010 release of their sophomore album "Dark and Bloody Ground", Fifth on the Floor saw some additional line-up changes as Robin Polly and Chris Collins parted ways with band and were replaced by Aaron Graham in drums and Jason Parsons on bass. (Be sure to check out our Dark and Bloody Ground review).

Fifth on the Floor has built a rock-solid testament to honest music, with songs like "Shine", "On My Way", and "The Fall". Having played nearly three hundred shows in four years, they've honed their show to an unforgettable experience. A Fifth on the Floor show is not unlike a one night stand: they let their hair down, kick your ass, and, with any luck, you'll remember it in the morning. (http://www.puresouthernrock.com)

Time: 00:54:50
Size: 125,55 MB

Australia

Album Notes

Australian based guitar maestro Geoff Achison has a new album, Chasing My Tail, featuring more of the same recipe that has won him fans around the world.

Here he presents a fresh batch of original songs, bluesy rave-ups and a couple of old favourites too. Achison has been a key player on the Melbourne blues scene for some years now but has more recently been wooing them in the USA and Britain. Closer to home, Geoff was recently honoured as an Official Patron of the Frankston International Guitar Festival.

The choice of music for the new album has largely come from audience requests. Featuring his world famous Souldiggers, the Horns From Hell and Classically Blue Strings this album showcases the variety of working combos Acho has found himself making music with over the past few years.

JB Hi Fi, the national music retailer chain in Oz sums it up: "After a couple of live albums break, Geoff Achison returns with what could be considered a sampler disc of all his current musical states of mind. From acoustic-based blues to (almost) New Orleans Jazz/Blues, this works from one end to the other without any hiccups along the way... Those of you who know the man's talents will need no more encouragement..." Enjoy!

Smokin' Joe Kubek & B'nois King 2003 Roadhouse Research

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:47:18
Size: 108,21 MB

review by Hal Horowitz

Unfortunately for Joe Kubek and his shotgun-riding singer/rhythm guitarist partner Bnois King, in the wake of great Texas guitarists like the Vaughan Brothers, just being a really good Lone Star fret slinger gets overlooked. Which is a shame, because over the course of nine albums, Kubek and King crafted a workmanlike if understated catalog of R&B-influenced roadhouse blues.

On their debut for Blind Pig, the duo churn up more of the same fare they refined the previous 12 years. Their blues-rock is genuine if derivative, and Kubek is a rugged six-stringer who makes up for his lack of a distinctive sound with gutsy meat-and-potatoes playing. Thankfully, King adds warmth and class with his smooth, soulful, and entirely unpretentious singing. His relaxed voice contrasts perfectly with Kubek's tensile, rough-and-ready licks, infusing this music with a yin-yang that elevates it far above bar-band standards. Soulful, nearly pop numbers like "Tell Me Why" allow King to croon outside the confines of a tightly constructed blues tune. Suave yet tight, this and the funky "Cryin' Shame" open up the approach and push at the genre's boundaries. Bogged down slightly by obvious lyrics and song titles like "The Blues Is Still With Us" (a thin rewrite of "The Blues Is Alright") and "Got to Get Paid," this remains down-to-earth, often moving music whose heart is as big as the artist's home state.

Canned Heat 1968 Living The Blues

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:29:00
Size: 203,70 MB

United States

review by Lindsay Planer

Canned Heat's third collection, Living the Blues (1968), was likewise their first double-LP, heralding the rural hippie anthem "Going Up the Country" as well as the nearly three-quarter-hour "Refried Boogie." However, rather than distracting their audience, it became one of rock & roll's first two-LP sets to make a substantial showing on the charts, reaching the Top 20. Not surprising as the rest of the album -- essentially all of disc one -- is as solid (if not arguably more so) than their previous long player Boogie With Canned Heat (1968). Featured is the "classic" Heat lineup of Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (guitar/harmonica/vocals), Larry "The Mole" Taylor (bass), Henry "Sunflower" Vestine (guitar), Adolfo "Fido" de la Parra (drums), and Bob "The Bear" Hite (vocals), who unleash another batch of strong originals and engaging overhauls of a few blues staples -- including the solid cover of Charley Patton's "Pony Blues" that commences the effort.

Right out of the gate, the formidable team of Wilson and Vestine explore their musical passions with a focused drive that would significantly diminish in the years and on the records to follow. One of the primary factors in the package's commercial success was their update of Henry Thomas' "Going Down South," which they turned into the breezy "Goin' Up the Country." The song not only became one of their biggest hits, it was also used in the Woodstock (1970) documentary and a live version -- from the actual concert -- was presented on the soundtrack. Canned Heat are joined by one of their contemporaries as Brit bluesman John Mayall contributes to the compact reading of Jimmy Rogers'"Walking By Myself," not on guitar, but rather piano. He also tosses around the '88s during the "Bear Wires" movement of the side-long "Parthenogenesis" suite. While on the subject of guest keyboardists, Mac Rebbenack (aka Dr. John) joins in on the groovy ode to "Boogie Music." "One Kind Favour" (aka "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean") drives hard with Hite belting out behind the ensemble's propelling rhythms.

Aside from the slightly indulgent "Refried Boogie," Living the Blues (1968) stands as a testament to Canned Heat's prowess as modernizers of the blues and recommended as one of the most cohesive works from this incarnation.

"Pure Fucking Rock” was the motto, when the rock trio MERZY from the island Funen in Denmark was founded in 1988. MERZY did a meteoric career, when they only one year after establishing the band released the first album “MERZY” all over Europe. It was MERZY’s springboard to the openhearted enthusiasm from the big rock magazines. The “praises” was given for energy, eagerness and the capacity to play and that they didn’t ride the wave of homogeneity, which was so favoured at the time, but went into a different direction - back to the roots – with their refreshing and pure rock. Genre: Blues-Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:45:59
Size: 105,16 MB

This album is a stone classic (pun intended).Cut 1:"Sad Mary", present-tense ruminations of Mary Queen of Scots awaiting & being lead to her beheading, musical portryal of the moment the axe blade falls.Cut 2:"Friend" a wonderful haunting soulful dirge imploring 'open up your body let a friend in'.Cut 3:"Love" another dirge imploring 'give me your love, I want your love, give me your love..., in this world of false ideals, love you can count on..'Cut 4:"Mad Dogs And Englishmen" light relief about the good times the band had touring as back up to a top-hatted singer/pianist and his band. Cut5:"Things Are Getting Better", slow anthem to 'those who died for freedom...help us fight for freedom every day.Cut 6:"Ode To John Law", present-tense talking to a riot cop 'Listen please dear John, go easy with that stick, cause if you keep on hitting I'll fall and then you'll kick'. Cut7:"Danger Zone" ruminations on the state of the modern world, 'Just read your paper and you'll see just what exactly has been bothering me'. (Cut 8 bonus track, an edited-for-radio-play version of cut 5 but a nice alternative way to finish the album if you want to end on a positive note or can't be bothered programming it out). The musical mood of most of the album is is one of sadness and of coping with the cruelty of life, with a sombre eerie feel to the musical arrangements, which have strong influences from American Indian drumming & chanting, soulful slow psychedelia tinged guitar solos and prominent organ fills and dynamic shading. As always the lead singer Maggie Bell is as one with the rest of the band. For me,"Danger Zone" is outstanding in an album full of gems. I'd suggest anyone who likes to explore music that's a little different take a punt on this one. If you're already an STC fan you won't be dissappointed. I rate it as my favourite. review by Thom Owens

Supported by a new batch of Howlers, Omar Dykes doesn't show any signs of wear and tear on World Wide Open. The band continues to turn out a gut-busting mixture of blues and dirty rock & roll, occasionally sounding like Howlin' Wolf, other times like the Stones or Creedence Clearwater Revival. As always, the quality of songs is slightly inconsistent but the band never sounds tired -- they perform with as much energy, if not more, than they ever have.
