Michael Messer 2006 Second Mind

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:45:05
Size: 103,14 MB

United Kingdom

Review by Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Once upon a time, a reviewer would've noted the influence of Chicago blues on the English music scene of the 1960s. Thirty or so years later, it is just as relevant to note the influence of the English blues revival on contemporary players like Michael Messer. His sensibilities, in fact, draw from early Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall, and on occasion, the Rolling Stones. This, however, isn't meant to imply that Second Mind is no more than a revival of the revival.

On "Blue Letters" he mixes a brooding guitar with a backtrack of scratching vinyl to carve out a sound reminiscent of Chuck Prophet's later work. It's fascinating, in fact, to find two different artists, one working in America, one in Britain, cross-mixing genres to create fresh sounds. These fresh effects would mean little, however, without good songs, and Second Mind is full of them. Messer had a hand in most of them and the stylistic range is impressive. The infectious, upbeat "Hummingbirds in My Soul" gives way to the atmospheric "Big Wind," which in turn prepares the way for the Stones' rocker "Love." The production is clean and clear, making sure to keep space between the various guitar parts and tastefully weaving in bits of keyboards and gospel singing. The arrangements, taking advantage of the stylistic range, offer a number of pleasant surprises. Flourishes of accordion adorn "Shine On," while harmonica provides a little something extra on "Tail Feather Blues."

All of these elements, along with Messer's fine vocals, make Second Mind a superior release and also a match for his 2001 release, King Guitar.

James Montgomery Band 1974 High Roller

Genre: Blues
Rate: 128 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:37:27
Size: 34,22 MB

United States

Review by Joe Viglione

James Montgomery's 1974 release on Capricorn/Warner Brothers has the harp playing vocalist in fine form. With Otis Spann guitarist Peter Malick, the six-piece ensemble crafted a serious album of blues-pop with production by Tom Dowd and the man who would hit with the Bee Gees shortly after this, Albhy Galuten. Side two is more accessible. "Sing You a Love Song" is written and sung by drummer Chuck Purro, and that's the interesting thing about the James Montgomery Blues Band: Four different musicians share the lead vocals, and only one of them is the star.

Guitarist Peter Bell shares the lead with Montgomery on the Otis Redding tune that ends the album, "Ten Page Letter." This title, along with five others, was recorded in June of 1974 at Atlantic Recording Studios in New York, with Tom Dowd assisting engineer Gene Paul; "I Can't Stop (No, No, No)," "Schoolin' Them Dice," "Sing You a Love Song," and "Try It" were recorded in July at Capricorn Recording Studios, Macon, Georgia. Another interesting thing is that the bluesier tunes were placed on side one and the poppier songs made it to the second, but both studios' sessions are pretty evenly represented on each side of the disc. Keyboardist David Case sounds up on "Any Number Can Play," and Montgomery does a terrific job with Allen Toussaint's "Brickyard Blues."

During this interesting period of Boston rock & roll, James Montgomery's band escaped the "Bosstown Sound" tag by sticking to its roots. Too bluesy to be mistaken for the J. Geils Band, Montgomery is a well-loved personality in New England, and this record is a respectable outing by a very talented bunch.

Anders Osborne 1995 Which Way To Here

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:51:12
Size: 117,19 MB

Sweden United States

Review by Larry Belanger

It is a rare event when an artist can deliver an example of what many would consider great American folk music; Anders Osborne does this with the ease of a true master. This is an album that serves well as an entertainment package, as well as a learning tool for those in search of roots based music.

Solid roots blues music is featured in the opening number, "Pleasin' You." The intro features some great fretwork along with Anders Osborne's soulful vocals. When the rest of the band gets into the action, there are some colorful nuances from the organ and electric lead guitar lifting the blend to another plateau. The mix for "Favorite Son" is a rock beat structured with a melody that could have easily come from the Jackson Browne camp. "Limestone Bay" has a strong Bayou country feel. Anders Osborne's vocal style also complements the melody, adding expressive color. "Don't Leave Me" features a beautiful acoustic presentation by Anders Osborne in a folk-rock style that rings out with genuine American heart and soul.

Performances of this magnitude, unfortunately, are quickly becoming a thing of the past. In the same circle as Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie and other great American folk singers, Anders Osborne fits the bill with ease. It is the perfectly crafed melodies, which are timeless pieces of art, that make this album truly appealing.
