When Santana took to the stage on the afternoon of August 16, 1969, they were relatively unknown outside of the thriving Bay Area music scene. By the time they triumphantly walked off the stage they were considered one of the biggest SPAMises at the Woodstock Festival. "Their music was so exciting and fresh, it took people awhile to figure it out but when they finally did they just knocked everybody out," recounts Woodstock co-producer Michael Lang.
Santana delivered a career-making performance at Woodstock, melding Latin-rock and bruising blues. "Michael Shrieve's drum solo on 'Soul Sacrifice' was the moment where the band really won over the entire crowd," Lang reveals. "To be able to connect with a crowd of that size was a revelation to the band. A star was born."
