Talk about culture shock: When UNREAL starts to spin, the first thing out of the speakers is an uptown soul arrangement that sounds like Gene Barge's work on Little Milton's mid-Sixties Chicago sides. The song resolves into Willie Dixon's "Evil", of all things, with the smoky vocal. It's Janis Bukovskis who proceeds to really testify as the song shifts into gospel raveup mode before ending. The skittering guitar solo comes from producer Duke Robillard, who recognizes that the Latvian Blues Band has got it goin' on.

The band's selfreleased album demonstrates a feeling for electric and acoustic blues in a range of styles as well as funk and even reggae rhythms. (Tom Hyslop – “Blues Revue” Magazine #122 Feb/Mar 2010)

Malted Milk was formed in 1995 by Arnaud Fradin and Emmanuel Frangeul, at first as acoustic blues duo. Meanwhile, in 1996 they decide to create an electric line adding the drummer Michael Catel and bassist John Francis Vincendeau, to build a directory in the tradition of the Chicago blues, influenced by Albert Collins, Albert King and Hound Dog Taylor. Originating from Nantes, France, Malted Milk moves within the sheerest Afro-American musical tradition, brilliantly combining blues, rock and soul music. The band has become one of the major figures of the French blues scene. This notoriety goes far beyond the French border, since the band has also performed abroad on many occasions to back headliners such as Big Joe Turner or to participate in the finals of the Memphis International Blues Challenge in 2007.

Harpoon Blues Band 2008 Live In Split

Genre: Blues Rock
Rate: 128 kbps / 44100
Time: 00:37:42

Croatia

HARPOON BLUES BAND story can be registered from the spring of 2006. At that time, Jadran Vuskovic, an expert guitarist and one of the founders of legendary Croatian band DALEKA OBALA, and Predrag Lovrincevic, blues enthusiast, the harmonica player and ex-member of the Split blues bands BLACK CAT BONE and NINE BELOW ZERO, began to play acoustics music at various Split clubs. Soon, the piano player, File Aljinovic, joins the duo, and they have been playing together since the beginning of year 2007. The band's name is AKUSTIK THREE. At that time the bass player, Duje Coko, joins the band, and soon after him the young guitarist, Vicko Franic, joins the band too. They appear together at many Split clubs, the band gets a new profile and changes their name into AKUSTIK 5, acquiring many new fans. Soon File Aljinovic leaves the band and moves to Zagreb.

The band adopts an electric form, and they need a drummer. Since that time many drum players played with Akustik 5, like Jadran Ducic (jazz band Black Coffe), Patak (Otprilike Ovako), Toni Silobrcic (Zrakomlat) and others. They call themselves HARPOON BLUES BAND.Finally, Josko Radic, who sometimes played with band on his second instrument, clarinet, joined the band on drums at the end of 2007. With this crew HARPOON BOOGIE BLUES BAND is finally completed. Why Harpoon Boogie Blues Band? Harmonica is one of blues symbols, it recalls the accompanying sound of sea ( Split is an ancient Mediterranean city and place where the Harpoons are coming from), and finally it is an honest and direct access to blues which all the members of HARPOON BLUES BAND have under their skin .That is the definitely good reason for their band's name. BLUES ON!!

United Kingdom

Around September 1971, Brian May met up with an old friend, Terry Yeadon, who was involved in the setting up of a new recording studio in Wembley called De Lane Lea. The studios needed musicians to try out the new equipment they had installed - and preferably a band who could play loud! The deal was that the musicians would record using the equipment, and potential studio users would be on hand to hear and watch them.

In return for their services the band could record their demos for free. It was an opportunity not to be missed and, of course, Queen jumped at it. Not only would they be able to make the all-important demo tapes, but they would have ample occasion to meet producers and engineers, people who could be vital to their future.

The Nice 1968 The Thoughts Of Emerlist Davjack

Time: 00:50:44

Review by Evolver

The first album by The Nice is their only studio album with founding guitarist David O'List. In a way, it actually helped their sound to have another instrument to temper Keith Emerson's keyboards. And the album is quite progressive for it's time (1967). While there is only a hint of what Emerson will eventually do with ELP, I'd still call it progressive.

As on any album by The Nice, Lee Jackson's vocals can be annoying. At least he only uses that drunken barroom voice sparingly.

The title track is interesting, if only for the 60's flower child vocals on the intro. It's fun to picture Emerson (who is credited for background vocals) singing along. Then there's Rondo. While I like the song somewhat, I wish they had had the courtesy to credit Dave Brubeck with the composition (and turned it into a 4/4 song).

War And Peace is a cool, blues rock jam, but Emerson seems to have gotten short changed in the mix. His keyboards are waaaay in the background at times.

The rest of the songs are primarily sixties psychedelic, with Emerson's flourishes adding a slight symphonic prog flavor.

Arlo Guthrie 1967 Alice's Restaurant

Genre: Folk
Rate: 160 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:34:41
Size: 39,66 MB

United States

"Alice's Restaurant Massacree" (commonly referred to simply as "Alice's Restaurant") is one of singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie's most prominent works, a musical monologue based on a true story that began on Thanksgiving Day 1965, and which inspired a 1969 movie of the same name. In an interview for All Things Considered, Guthrie said the song points out that any American citizen who was convicted of a crime, no matter how minor (in his case, it was littering), could avoid being conscripted to fight in the Vietnam War.

The song lasts 18 minutes and 34 seconds, occupying the entire A-side of Guthrie's 1967 debut record album, also titled Alice's Restaurant. It is notable as a satirical, first-person account of 1960s counterculture, in addition to being a hit song in its own right. The final part of the song is an encouragement for the listeners to sing along, to resist the U.S. draft, and to end war.

Though the song's official title, as printed on the album, is "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" (pronounced mass-a-cree, not massacre), Guthrie states in the opening line of the song that "This song's called 'Alice's Restaurant'" and that "'Alice's Restaurant'... is just the name of the song;" as such, the shortened title is the one most commonly used for the song today.

Apart from the chorus which begins and ends it, the "song" is in fact a spoken monologue, with a repetitive but catchy ragtime guitar backing. It recounts a true but comically exaggerated Thanksgiving Day adventure as a satirical, deadpan protest against the Vietnam War draft.

The Alice in the song was restaurant-owner Alice M. Brock, who in 1964 used $2,000 supplied by her mother to purchase a deconsecrated church in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where Alice and her husband Ray would live. It was here rather than at the restaurant — which came later — where the song's Thanksgiving dinners were actually held.

On that Thanksgiving, November 25, 1965, the 18-year-old Guthrie and his friend Richard Robbins, 19, were arrested by Stockbridge police officer William "Obie" Obanhein for illegally dumping some of Alice's garbage after discovering that the town dump was closed for the holiday. Two days later, they pled guilty in court before a blind judge, James E. Hannon. The song describes to ironic effect the arresting officer's frustration at this "typical case of American blind justice," in which the officer was prepared to present "27 8×10 color glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was to be used as evidence against us," only to have the judge enter the courtroom accompanied by a seeing-eye dog. In the end, Guthrie and Robbins were fined $50 and told to pick up their garbage.

The song goes on to describe Guthrie's being called up for the draft, and the surreal bureaucracy at the New York City induction center at 39 Whitehall Street. Because of Guthrie's criminal record for littering, he is first sent to the Group W Bench, where those draftees wait who cannot be inducted except under a "moral waiver", then outright rejected as unfit for military service. The ironic punch line of the story's denouement is that, in the words of Guthrie, "I'm sittin' here on the Group W bench 'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough to join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after bein' a litterbug."

The final part of the song is where Arlo tells the audience that should they find themselves facing the draft they should walk into the military psychiatrist's office and sing, "Shrink, you can get anything you want, at Alice's restaurant," and walk out. Thus is born, "the Alice's Restaurant Anti-Massacree Movement, and all you got to do to join is to sing it the next time it comes around on the guitar". Bio:

Jake Walker, “The Ambassador of New York Blues”, has earned an international reputation as “one of the very finest Blues guitar players and singers anywhere” (Danny Bryant, Rounder Records). He has entranced audiences around the world with a style of guitar playing and singing that is at once “deeply soulful and grooving” (Blues Blast), and extraordinarily original, setting himself apart from a sea of copycats and headbangers masquerading as Bluesmen. Jake Walker's many international tours as frontman have taken him to Holland, Belgium, England, France, and especially Italy, where he has headlined numerous festivals, and filled historic halls and squares with delighted fans.

Jake's debut C.D., Confidence Man was produced and mixed by multi-platinum selling produced Elliot Mazer (Neil Young, Janis Joplin, The Band, Jerry Garcia, Santana, The Who), and features famed Blues musicians such as Mark Naftalin (Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, Duane Allman, Van Morrison), and Arthur Neilson (Shemekia Copeland, Cyndi Lauper). The band was then joined by James Batchelar on Keyboards and Danny Giles on guitars. Review by Al Campbell

The Chief Eddy Clearwater's West Side Strut is his first release for the Alligator label, and while nothing here is a surprise, Clearwater's Chicago blues/Chuck Berry hybrid remains evident as he works his way through a mix of rock & roll, country, soul, and gospel. Along with Clearwater is a stellar group of fellow Windy City musicians led by second guitarist (and producer) Ronnie Baker Brooks and his band, a horn section, and appearances by Billy Branch on harp, guitarist Lonnie Brooks, and backup vocals by Otis Clay and Jimmy Johnson. Spirited cover versions of Muddy Waters' "Walking Through the Park" and Lowell Fulson's "Trouble, Trouble" are highlights, as are the gutbucket blues "A Good Leavin' Alone," "Blue Over You," and the autobiographical "They Call Me the Chief." West Side Strut is another solid effort for the Chief and Alligator, as well.

Review by Cub Koda

Mississippi bluesman Johnson comes North to play in Chicago and the results are indeed satisfying. Taken from two different shows at two different venues (Hothouse and Buddy Guy's Legends) over a period of two years ('94 and '95), Johnson is ably backed by Aaron Burton's band with Lester "Mad Dog" Davenport contributing some nice harp on the set from the Legends show. Johnson keeps the set lists jumping, from straight-ahead blues ("Sweet Sixteen," "Black Rooster," "Fightin' Woman," Z.Z. Hill's "The Blues Is Alright") to Mississippi-juke-joint dance numbers (Hank Ballard's "The Twist," "Night Train") and even the stray 'hillbilly blues' number like "Pistol Packin' Mama" and Ivory Joe Hunter's "Since I Met You Baby." Sound is dodgy in spots, but Johnson's palpable energy comes through just fine.

Album Notes

‘The Veldman Brothers’: A solid band moulded around ‘bloodbrothers’ Gerrit and Bennie Veldman: Gerrit on guitar, Bennie on Hammond and bluesharp together with Marco Overkamp on drums and Donald van der Goes on bass.

Infinite energy, visible joy, tangible synergy; music played from the guts: a mean and tight rhythm-section that forces Gerrit and Bennie Veldman into fabulous measures as singers, soloists and entertainers.

Four talented musicians with massive experience, influenced by each other and by original heroes like the Vaughan Brothers, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Elmore James, Howlin’Wolf, Jimmy Smith and the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

‘The Veldman Brothers’ follow these tracks respectfully: with covers, with their own songs and above all with a highly recognizable ‘Veldman Brothers-sound’.

You’ll find ‘The Veldman Brothers’ playing festivals as well as small blues joints and already they have managed to abash the audiences at every major bluesclub and festival in Holland.

Their first record ‘Home’ was rewarded ‘Best Blues album of 2007’ by dedicated internet-sites and radio-stations.

Blues, rhythm and blues, swing-blues and delta-blues, blues with a touch off rock and blues with a twist off soul or funk. ‘The Veldman Brothers’ won’t recognize any limits and obey to only one golden rule: ‘It has to be pure and straight from the heart’.

‘Blues and roots straight from the heart’. Make sure that you’ve seen, heard and felt ‘The Veldman Brothers’.
