This is yet another ABB cover band from Norway. The band is called "Whipping Post" and they have a CD called: "Live at Norwegian Wood" which is sold among others on a German website called www.glitterhouse.com as an independent release and got raving reviews.
In the new issue of the American literary magazine Oxford American (a great music special issue) the acclaimed actor/ director/ musician BILLY BOB THORNTON claims that The Allman Brothers album Live At Fillmore East is his all time favourite. There is good reason to listen to Thornton, who is just about to put out his debut album on the great Lost Highway label out of Nashville. But Thornton is not alone in his appraisal of this rock landmark album. Maybe to some people´s surprise this album (and Allman´s music in general) also hit home with music lovers in the absolutely not southern country of Norway!
This strange fact has led to the formation of Whipping Post, an eight piece band drawn from some of the best Norwegian rock/country bands, to play the music of this Macon, Georgia band. So far The Whipping Post has done only five official gigs and the one now released on CD by Glitterhouse was only the third one! On this occasion Whipping Post played together with Lynyrd Skynyrd at the Norwegian Wood festival in Oslo in June of 2000. When the Skynyrd crew heard the sound-check of Whipping Post, they tried to prevent the band from using their two drummers. One can only speculate in the reason for this!
Anyway, after the Whipping Post concert veteran road managers for Skynyrd told the band that their sound brought them back to the good old days in the early seventies in the south. Which of course is exactly the point. Whipping Point´s focus is the classic years from 1969 until 1974. But as the Allmans themselves drew from and expanded on classic blues material, Whipping Post is improvising in the same manner. Thus we now have longer versions of classic A.B. material than the Allmans ever released themselves.
To pull this off The Whipping Post is calibrated with the three lead guitars of the brothers Aslag & Lars Håvard Haugen and Geir Sundstøl. Lars Håvard might be known to some through his work with the trio HGH (Motorspycho). But Lars Håvard and Aslag have a day job fronting Scandinavias most successful country rock band, Hellbillies. (With a bunch of gold and platinum albums to their credit).
Geir Sundstøl is one of Norway´s most versatile guitarist recording with lots of Norwegian stars (including a-ha singer Morten Harket). Geir has also recorded and toured with legendary American singer/songwriter Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Adding to that Geir was also the role model for the Cohen brothers Scandinavian killer in the movie FARGO, whose name is Geir! Whipping Post also has two drummers (despite the dislike of certain Skynyrd roadies): Martin Horntvedt (leading Norwegian jazz band, Jaga Jazzist) and Olaf Olsen (ex Big Bang).
The bass is handled by current Big Bang keyboardist Nicholai Eilertsen and keyboards by veteran organist Lasse Hafreager (ex Hellbillies). The Dickie Betts lead vocals parts is done by Aslag Haugen and the Greg Allman parts by Lars Erik Ulvestad.
The band is planning to do more live work in the next year and maybe also record a studio album based on the Allman Bros ideas, but with original material. (Hittin' The Web with the Allman Brothers Band Forum - ABBDutchFan)
