Many artists make good and often killer blues records, either choosing to record in a modern electric style or in a traditional acoustic style. I wanted to record a blues-based album utilizing acoustic instruments played both traditionally and with an electric intensity. The acoustic guitar has for centuries alluded to the ideal woman; resplendent with soft shoulders, sensual curves, and when she's handled properly, the most glorious sounds emanate. This is the Acousticland Lady.

Along with my bandmates, the friendly and funky Steve Calabria on bass, and the sturdy and steady Scott Turner on drums and percussion, I wanted my friend and colossal talent Michael Hill, to guest with us on this project. Michael is one of the most refreshing bluesmen working today, and he plays with such originality and conviction that I knew I wanted to record with him someday.

We believe that it's necessary to simultaneously respect the past while looking towards the future when making music. We hope you enjoy this album. We surely enjoyed making it. Thanks for looking and listening! Colin John (2003)

Review by Thom Jurek

Los Lonely Boys are another entry into the rock & roll family band tree. The Garza brothers -- Henry, Jojo, and Ringo (yes, that is his real name and he is the drummer) -- like the Everlys, the Louvins, the Davies (Ray and Dave), the Youngs (Malcolm and Angus), and many others, are forging a new sound from the various roots traditions in American music. Rooted in rock & roll basics such as Chuck Berry, the Beatles, Ritchie Valens and the Latin rhythm-inspired sounds created by the Santana band, the brothers Garza, who hail from San Angelo, TX, also employ the wondrously soulful and raw Tex-Mex textures created by Doug Sahm and Freddy Fender.

Los Lonely Boys' self-titled debut was recorded at Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studio in Austin and features Nelson and Reese Wynans guesting on guitar and keyboards respectively on "La Contestacion." But there is plenty to the sound of Los Lonely Boys; their stew is one rich not only in history, but energy, songwriting craft, fine singing, and amazing playing -- check Henry's riffing, phrasing, and soloing on "Crazy Dreams" and one might think the ghost of Stevie Ray Vaughan is visiting Albert King's. "Dime Mi Amor," with its funky minor-key chord voicings dredged through a solid Latin rock structure with shimmering son rhythms and conjunto backbeats, is stunning in its complexity, yet is as accessible as any pop song. Driven by Henry's fluid and floral acoustic work and shot through with a soulful Tex-Mex backbeat and vocal harmonies that touch upon the originality of Cesar Rosas' and David Hidalgo's from Los Lobos as well as the Everlys, "Hollywood" is not merely a referencing of source material, but a genuine way of combining ideas to create a new sound, one that is not only inherently, but actually the Garza Bros. As evidenced by songs like "Real Emotion," "More Than Love," "Onda," "Senorita," "La Contestacion," and "Velvet Sky," los Lonely Boys reveal that they are tied to tradition but far from stuck to it; their songs are first-rate, crafted with nuance, grace, and grit and wash over the listener like a late-summer dance party under a full moon. This glorious, dark, and steamy diamond, rooted in innocence and raw rock & roll beauty, is most definitely a contender for debut album of the year.

Jamming with Edward! is an album recorded by three members of The Rolling Stones with Nicky Hopkins and Ry Cooder at London's Olympic Studio during the Let It Bleed sessions of 1969, and released on Rolling Stones Records in 1972. Keith Richards had stormed out of the sessions for a few days in protest of producer Jimmy Miller's decision to bring Cooder in to beef up the guitars as Dave Mason did during the Beggars Banquet sessions.

The eponymous Edward was pianist Nicky Hopkins, as in Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder, Hopkins' star turn on Quicksilver Messenger Service's album Shady Grove.

The Butler Twins turned in a fine debut with I Ain't Gonna Worry About Tomorrow. The pair specialize in hard-driving urban blues, straight out of the '60s. There are no innovations here, but there don't need to be, since the duo slams home this blistering electric blues with passion and energy.

This CD started out as a collection of songs you might hear on any jukebox in a real blues bar or roadhouse anywhere you might be able to find cold beer and killer barbecue. Of course, only the best beer joints are found out in the country, where only a few people know the exact location and the bar clientele are happy to see a new face. These are the selections I would make if I found myself standing in front of an old Rock-ola or Wurlitzer jukebox on any Saturday night far away from the strip malls and theme restaurants.

I hope this collection of songs takes you to your favorite bar, roadhouse, beer joint or Rib shack, where the music is good and the joint is jumpin and a new adventure waits for you down that two lane road. (Big Mike Griffin)

Biography by Bruce Eder

Toy Caldwell was best known as the lead guitarist and main songwriter in the Marshall Tucker Band. A unique personality as well as a formidable musician, he was a peer of both Dickey Betts and Charlie Daniels, and his best work crossed effortlessly between country, blues, and rock & roll. A few years after the breakup of the Marshall Tucker Band in the late '80s, he re-emerged as leader of the Toy Caldwell Band, which played small-scale shows of the kind that the Marshall Tucker Band couldn't do. He also recorded one solo album before his death in early 1993. Although most of his fame inevitably rests with the Marshall Tucker Band, Caldwell left behind a small but glorious body of solo material.

Joe Louis Walker 2002 In The Morning

Genre: Blues

Time: 00:52:51
Size: 120,94 MB

Review by Hal Horowitz

Rootsier than Robert Cray, more soulful than Jimmie Vaughan, and boasting a gospel background similar to the great Sam Cooke, Joe Louis Walker is a contemporary soul/bluesman who flawlessly and effortlessly mixes his diverse influences.

On his first album in three years, Walker proves he's an artist capable of terse, searing guitar solos, as on the R&B "Do You Wanna' Be With Me?"; mid-tempo, jazzy soul such as "Leave that Girl Alone"; or rugged acoustic Delta blues like the appropriate album-closing "Strangers in Our House." Walker -- who began his career playing religious music -- not surprisingly proves himself a more than adequate soul/gospel vocalist in the Al Green vein on the spiritual "Where Jesus Leads." In fact, the Memphis groove is infused through much of this album, with Walker's simmering version of the Stones' "2120 South Michigan Avenue" sounding like a lost Booker T. & the MG's B-side. But he's at his strongest when plowing through gritty, Southern-styled swamp-rocking R&B, as on "Strange Love," the album's strongest track, where he shouts, growls, howls, and testifies like Wilson Pickett in his prime. Walker is in full control throughout, moaning and crooning in a honey-and-grits style that is immediately recognizable. Even when he plays it straight on "Joe's Jump," Walker sounds invigorated, whipping off piercing leads even in a timeworn shuffle style. The opening tracks, "You're Just About to Lose Your Crown" with its bubbling Latin percussion, and the easygoing groove of the title tune smoothly coalesce Walker's soul, blues, and gospel roots.

One of the versatile musician's most consistently successful albums, this is convincing proof that Joe Louis Walker is one of the most overlooked and distinctive artists working in the soul/blues genre.

Review by Cub Koda

Produced by Duke Robillard and utilizing his band as the backing unit, Cool Blues Walk is tightly focused from note one, making a marvellous framework for "The Chief" to do exactly what he does best. With the exception of the covers "Sen-Say-Shun," "Stranded," and "I Just Want to Make Love to You," Eddy Clearwater wrote every tune aboard in his usual wide range of styles from the rocking "Very Good Condition" to the country-ish "Nashville Road" to the shuffling "Boppin' at the Top of the Rock." Clearwater continues to surprise with a rare appearance playing piano and singing the decidedly non-blues-like ballad "I Love You" which also features Marilyn Mair and Mark Davis adding mandocello and mandola to this distinctive tune. Robillard shares solo space with Clearwater throughout the album, and their exchanges on the moody "Blues for a Living" is solid blues playing in two contrasting styles. Perhaps Clearwater's most focused album to date, this 1998 outing captures a '50s West Side bluesman still at the peak of his abilities.
