Long John Baldry 1976 Welcome To Club Casablanca

Genre: Blues
Rate: 160 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:42:15

United Kingdom Canada

Biography

Born 12 January 1941, London, England. Beginning his career playing folk and jazz in the late 50s, Baldry toured with Ramblin' Jack Elliott before moving into R&Born His strong, deep voice won him a place in the influential Blues Incorporated, following which he joined Cyril Davies' R&B All Stars. After Davies' death, Long John fronted the Hoochie Coochie Men, which also included future superstar Rod Stewart, who later joined Baldry in Steam Packet (featuring Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll). After a brief period with Bluesology (which boasted a young Elton John on keyboards), Baldry decided to go solo and record straightforward pop. Already well known on the music scene, he nevertheless appeared an unusual pop star in 1967 with his sharp suits and imposing 6 foot 7 inch height. Composer/producer Tony Macaulay and his partner John Macleod presented him with the perfect song in "Let The Heartaches Begin", a despairing ballad which Baldry took to number 1 in the UK in 1967.

His chart career continued with the Olympic Games theme, "Mexico", the following year, which also made the Top 20. By the end of the 60s, however, the hits had ceased and another change of direction was ahead. Furs and a beard replaced the suits and the neat, short haircut, as Long John attempted to establish himself with a new audience. With production assistance from former colleagues Rod Stewart and Elton John, he recorded a strong album, It Ain't Easy, but it failed to sell. After a troubled few years in New York and Los Angeles he emigrated to Vancouver, Canada, where he performed on the club circuit. In the early 90s his voice was used as Robotnik on the Sonic The Hedgehog computer game. After many years a new Baldry album was released in 1993, subtly titled It Still Ain't Easy. Since then from his base in the USA he has continued to perform in blues clubs, recording occasionally. (http://www.music.us)

Barrelhouse 2002 Walking In Time

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:40:24
Size: 92,61 MB

Netherlands

A leading Dutch pop journalist, the well respected Jip Golsteyn, once wrote that Barrelhouse is and has been for a long time, the leading rhythm & blues group in the Low Countries. The band started in 1974, released 10 albums in as many years, among them a live album with the legendary Albert Collins from Texas.

After some changes in personnel during their acclaimed existence, the band split up in 1986, individual members finding new ways in different groups. But in spite of leadsinger Tineke Schoemaker's chart success with One Two, a longing for the supple and solid band that once was theirs crept into the minds of the Barrelhouse members while time passed. In 1993 Barrelhouse hit the road again with their original line-up. It was an instant success, not in the least because of the flexibility with which the band renewed its repertoire. This renewed sound and approach was highlighted on the CD's that followed: Fortune Changes (1993) and Time Frames (1998). By the end of the Summer of 2002 the third CD since the split was released: Walking in Time.

Some say that Barrelhouse is 'magic', a lucky combination of musicians that blends into an energetic and solidly lubricated piece of rhythm & blues, all at once catching the eye, forcing you to dance. The most obvious element is the powerful voice of the lead singer Tineke Schoemaker. She doesn't need to imitate: her soul and sound are original, her range and timing touches the audience immediately. But where would she be without the band featuring bass player Jan Willem Sligting and drummer Bob Dros who make up the very solid rhythm section always leaving room for the soloist to perform on top with their very characteristic Barrelhouse groove. Both guitar players Johnny and Guus LaPorte prove that excellent guitar-solos and strong and inspired rhythm guitar go hand in hand. The brothers excel in both. The band is completed by the technical prowess of piano player Han van Dam, who adds to the solidity of the rhythm section both during solos or in accompaniment. Barrelhouse is dynamic in their slow blues and medium tempo, but even more so when they get worked up with an energetic number which they perform with a kind of enthusiasm that puts a spell on any audience lucky enough to catch a show.

The band has appeared on Dutch television on several occasions and played on major European festivals like Breminale (Bremen - Germany), Moulin Blues (Ospel, The Netherlands), The R&B Festival Peer (Belgium), Blue Balls Festival (Luzern, Switzerland) and North Sea Jazz Festival (The Hague, The Netherlands). Their most recent CD Walking in Time is now available and is already receiving raving reviews in The Netherlands. (http://www.munichrecords.com)

The J. J. Band 1971 J. J. Band

Genre: Rock

Belgium

The year was 1966. The city was Charleroi in Belgium, where the two Portugese brothers Toni and Fernando Lameirinhas (alias Tony & Wando Lam) founded the band “Jess & James” as Belgiums answer to soul music. They had lived in England before, catching the soul virus while playing in various beat bands like “Screaming Lord Sutch”. Their song “Move” suddenly became a massive hit all over Europe in 1967 and the band consequently produced three soul pop albums under the name of “Jess & James” until 1969 for the Palette/ Belter label. The boys were being discovered as a sure-fire commercial attraction in Belgium and Spain, but the fast success soon led to musical dissension within the group.

At the same time, the backing band of “Jess & James” started to separate under the name “J.J. Band” to experiment with new sounds, finally developing into a more soul jazz orientated outfit. A constant creative growth lyrically and musically within the group was self-evident in this first album simply entitled “The J.J. Band”. The new formation was led by arranger Ralph Benatar (Sax and Flute), Douglas Lucas (Trumpet) and Francis Weyer (aka Francis Goya/ Guitar), who all played leading roles on most of the “El Chicles” and “Chakachas” related releases of the times.

The minds behind the J.J. Band, Benatar and Lucas, started to write own material for the first longplay release as well as taking famous songs and truely give them a new and more complex sound, with small horn & flute section, very diverse guitar moods and eclectic but excellent percussion sounds throughout. The LP was produced in 1970 by Roland Kluger, brother of composer and producer Jean Kluger, and solely pressed in small amounts by Polydor Records in Belgium and Canada.

Jess & James aka the Lameirinhas brothers themselves moved to Amsterdam and transformed into the unsuccessful Latin Jazz band “Sail-Joia” in 1975. At this point the short career of the J.J. Band was already finished. In 1971 the famous drummer Bruno Castellucci helped out on the sessions for the J.J. Bands second album, also entitled “The J.J. Band”, recorded at Chappell Studios London. Their style had developed more and more towards progressive rock and although this final album was produced by the great Brian Bennett and released on CBS Records in the UK, it passed rather unnoticed. Then the musicians changed their name to “Plus” in 1972 and released a “real final” album on the label Pink Elephant, that should become another impossible to find collectors item. Vanilla Fudge 1967 Vanilla Fudge

Genre: Psychedelic Rock

Time: 00:42:36

Review by Paul Collins

In a debut consisting of covers, nobody could accuse Vanilla Fudge of bad taste in their repertoire; with stoned-out, slowed-down versions of such then-recent classics as "Ticket to Ride," "Eleanor Rigby," and "People Get Ready," they were setting the bar rather high for themselves. Even the one suspect choice -- Sonny Bono's "Bang Bang" -- turns out to be rivaled only by Mott the Hoople's version of "Laugh at Me" in putting Bono's songwriting in the kindest possible light. Most of the tracks here share a common structure of a disjointed warm-up jam, a Hammond-heavy dirge of harmonized vocals at the center, and a final flat-out jam. Still, some succeed better than others: "You Keep Me Hanging On" has a wonderfully hammered-out drum part, and "She's Not There" boasts some truly groovy organ jams. While the pattern can sound repetitive today, each song still works as a time capsule of American psychedelia.

Russell Miller & 6 V 6 2005 Original Blues

Genre: Blues
Rate: 214 kbps VBR / 44100
Time: 00:45:58
Size: 54,91 MB

United States

Album Notes

Russell Miller is a unique Bluesman, combining captivating lyrics and an unmistakable sound in his guitar playing. This new release is a mixture of previously released originals, remastered and a few new tunes that demonstrate Russell's range, as a songwriter, vocalist and guitar player.

"He doesn't sound like anyone else" is a comment often heard from Central Illinois blues fans. "Almost every other guitar player sounds like..." they continue. That is a true compliment to a Bluesman, and after you give this disc a spin, you'll agree. A fine mix of original tunes that are definitely Blues, but run through the chord changes a little differently, making it a more stimulating rhythm line to compliment the well crafted songs. A real Tunesmith at work!!

Russell wields his Telecaster like the pro he has become over the last 30 years of playing. He can emulate many different guitar players, but prefers to present his personal arsenal of licks with a mix of ferocity, tenacity and delicate, soulful touch.

Bruce Iglauer of Alligator Records says, "(his) guitar playing is fluid and confident" and "6V6 is a rare blues band that actually plays the blues."
Peter "Blewzzman" Lauro noted, "These guys know the blues as well as they know their tubes."

Brian Wilkinson's review said, "Russell plays tasteful, fluid, notes well-placed, blues guitar, playing within the context of the combo, rather than using the guitar to dominate it."

The Blues has a strong history in Central Illinois and 6V6 represents the continuation of that tradition as competitors in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2003 & 2006. Big City Rhythm & Blues Magazine featured Russell and son Aaron, 6V6 bass player, in their Family Reunion edition.

Chico's Bail Bonds 2006 Bust'n Out The Blues

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:47:04
Size: 107,71 MB

United States

Album Notes

“Chico’s Bail Bonds - Not just another blues band!” Yeah, I know, you’ve all heard that before. But this time it really means something. Now think about it for a moment, most local blues bands are made up of rock and rollers who didn’t get too far and so they've turned to playing some version of the blues in hopes of keeping themselves in the limelight – otherwise known as “Too old for rock and roll but quite ready to quit just yet” syndrome. Now, I’m NOT saying that’s a bad thing – oh no, far from it! It brings more attention to the blues.. a GOOD thing! But being a ex rocker seems to be considered the “norm” for a typical blues bands just now trying to break into the blues scene. Don’t believe me? Check out most up and coming "blues" act. Most all those bands are made of guys who are seasoned rock acts. They don’t do because they live and love the blues, they do it because they think it’s the only thing left to do! Here in lies the difference - Chico’s Bail Bonds is made of three musicians still in their prime, who have been playing the blues since their late teens and have love playing the blues from the very beginning! More concerned about playing the blues with respect for their fans and themselves, then about making it big has allowed themselves to hone their skills by playing tons of smoky bars and blues festivals in and around the California southland for years! And for the past 4 years, performing as the group you see and hear now. So due to popular demand of many of Chico’s fans that wanted to hear the band at home, they’ve finally taken time out playing live and recorded their first, all original CD which was just slated to be distributed to their live show fans but is now being made available to the general public to experience. We're not trying to be rich and world famous, just spreading our version of the blues! So, who are we? Check it out -

Chico’s Bail Bonds is -

Eric Ramirez - Guitar / Vocals
Was inspired at a very early age by the likes of Buddy Guy, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker and Stevie Ray Vaughn. But he also enjoyed the typical rock bands of today like U2 and even classic acts like the Beatles. But he knew early on where he wanted to be as well as what he wanted to play as a musician and he stayed true to his calling and it shows with every chord he plays and every song he sings. It’s truly not from the heart, but from his very soul that his music emits every feeling inside. A young man with an old soul.

The same is true for-
Aaron Murillo - Bass / Vocals
His formal training stems from classic to modern jazz where he was originally taught on Cello and transferred his knowledge to electric bass. He’s never really played in any modern or classic rock bands even though his taste runs from everything from Beethoven to Wolfmother. But his true calling has always been for the blues and his passion for it is as solid as the bass lines he lays down. And in songs like “Times are getting Tougher” or “Get off my Train” you not only hear but feel that passion he has for his music.

Joseph Velosa – Drums / Percussions / Keyboards / Harp / Backup Vocals
Never formally trained but grew up inspired in a house full of music. From big band swing sounds from his father’s collections to his sibling’s favourite rock/punk bands – All of whom played one instrument or another. He doesn’t claim to be any one style but keeps a true respect for all of music’s genres. Playing blues has become an inspiration to him and he loves the fact that the blues truly crosses many of music’s “lines” to become whatever the performer wants it to be. For him, the blues speaks simplicity and honesty - a language anyone can relate to.

Let’s face it. Anyone can play, speak, or even sing the blues. But it takes heart and character and a real love of the blues to bring it to life and to pass that feeling to an audience and Chico’s delivers on every song! But be warned! This CD isn’t for everybody, just those chosen few who really know and love the blues! Are you one of those few?

Enjoy!

White Cowbell Oklahoma 2009 Bombardero

Genre: Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:41:14
Size: 94,26 MB

Canada

Wildly popular in the Toronto area and meriting a small global fan base, the 17 members of White Cowbell Oklahoma have made their stage shows bizarre and outrageous. With some nine guitar players, four female backup singers, and a lead singer resembling Colonel Sanders, the band has recorded and demoed several songs. They've also played the North by Northeast Festival, as well as Canadian Music Week. In 2001, the band released a five-song EP. The band plays a Southern fried boogie blend of rock. Review by Scott Yanow

Many so-called blues releases are actually filled with bluesy R&B, soul, pop, and rock. There is no such stylistic confusion in Sadie Mae from Nick Moss & the Flip Tops. The music is no-nonsense blues, played with spirit, drive, and swing. Most of the selections are concise, getting their message across and not overstaying their welcome. By varying tempos and moods plus including occasional instrumentals, the quintet performs enjoyable and memorable music, with an emphasis on cooking straight-ahead grooves. Lead voices are Nick Moss on guitar and vocals, harmonica player Gerry Hunot, and pianist Bob Welsh (doubling on organ), but the tight yet loose rhythm section is not to be overlooked either. This is a fun set, well worthy of several listens.

Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers 1992 Empty Arms Motel

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:46:24
Size: 106,31 MB

United States

Review by Roch Parisien

Not a prolific composer, Thackery's strength lies in strong arrangements that make other people's material his own. He covers Stevie Ray Vaghan's "Rude Mood," and one suspects there will be comparisons made in this direction. His solos burn the motel down on Luther Johnson's "Lickin' Gravy," and he manages a more than credible job on Hendrix's "Red House."

Of the two self-penned numbers, the title track is a convincing boogie driven by an ultra-cool, echoed, chicken-scratch guitar riff, while "Getting Tired of Waiting" offers a more traditional blues shuffle.

Talco 2004 Tutti Assolti

Genre: Ska
Rate: 143 kbps VBR / 44100
Time: 00:35:27
Size: 40,54 MB

Italy

Talco are a strongly anti-fascist and anti-racist combat ska-punk group that believes in the independence of music and in the message that it must send against all discrimination.

Thinking about Venice, everybody right away has a picture of the famous historical centre in mind, with its canals and beautiful old buildings. Probably nobody thinks of the districts on the mainland, mainly working class industrial neighbourhoods, that don't have much of the beauty of the city centre. One of those is Marghera, well known in Italy for one of the biggest Italian workers rebellion in newer history. That's the home of TALCO ...

Born as a ska band, over time they found a sound all their own, mixing Patchanka rhythms typical of the Mano Negra with punk and ska, sometimes dabbling in Balkan and Kletzmer, but always true to their heritage of Italian singer-songwriters, especially when it comes to the lyrics. The first years are typical for most bands, some friends play music together on a basement, till they felt its finally time for a record. Their debut “Tutti Assolti” was released in October 2004 on Kob Records/ Mad Butcher, followed by “Combat Circus” in 2006, which got really positive feedback and reviews nearly everywhere, from Italy, Germany to Spain and even in Latin America. Step by step, they get more and bigger shows, made more contacts, friends and fans and also developed as musicians, a band and individuals, which results in “Mazel Tov”, released in spring 2008.

It not only outsold their other releases in short period of time, also the shows keep growing weather its in Spain, Germany, Croatia or Italy and they are guest on numerous Festivals in Summer 2008 and 2009. Some highlights were definitely selling out legendary clubs like the SO36 in Berlin or the Indra Club in Hamburg, headlining the Stemwede Open Air in front of 7000 people.

After a fruitful collaboration with Kob Records and Mad Butcher Records for five years, the band signed in Fall 2009 with Destiny Records and re-released their last two records there. Around the same time they also released a Benefit MCD for the “St. Pauli Fanräume e.V.” including “St. Pauli”, that was written after attending a game of the famous German work class soccer club. This song also got them an invitation for the 100 year birthday festival of the club and so they play at the sold out Millerntor Stadium in May '10.

In spring '10 they also took the time to go into the studio again to record their 4th record “La Cretina Commedia”. Musically the band the band keep the powerful sound from “Mazel Tov” and that makes them special live as well, but added a lot more variety and different influences. Lyrically its a concept album about the live and work of Peppino Impastato. Born into a mafia family, he turned against his father and became an anti-mafia activist. He was killed in '78 by the mafia, during his election campaign for the Cinisi council. It took over 20 years till all offenders were sentenced and his story got known to a wider audience through the movie “I cento passi” (100 steps). (http://www.myspace.com/talcopatchanka#)
