review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

After the burnished, mellow Moments, Boz Scaggs put some grit back into his music with this third album, Boz Scaggs & Band. Not that he got down and dirty -- his blue-eyed soul and funk is still sleek and stylish, music for uptown parties, not downtown juke joints. But Scaggs gave his band equal billing on the title here because they carry equal weight on Boz Scaggs & Band. It's a true band album, showcasing the group's tight interplay as much as it does Scaggs' vocals.

Sometimes, the band almost dominates the proceedings too much, as they do on "Runnin' Blue," where they're as splashy as a Vegas big band. Such excesses are balanced by the nimble "Up to You," this album's irresistible foray into country -- something that was a regular Boz feature at this point -- and the brief, breezy "Here to Stay," which helps keep things light and casual. But the best thing about Boz & Band is hearing that band play, particularly on "Flames of Love" and "Why Why," where they get down low, playing funky rock and soul that holds its own with Little Feat's Meters-inspired grooves.

Ibro Lolov & His Gypsy Orchestra 1998 Gypsy Music From Bulgaria, Vol. 1

Genre: Gypsy
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:57:24
Size: 131,28 MB

Bulgaria

The liner notes state that it is difficult to tell Bulgarian gypsy music from Bulgarian music in general. This adds further confirmation to an observation that wherever they go, the gypsies tend to assimilate to the music of the locals -- which they then proceed to play with great verve and proficiency.

This album consists of instrumentals with a few vocal numbers mixed in. The instruments include the accordion (which is generally the lead and which is played by Lolov), the violin (which occasionally takes over the lead), guitar, bass, and drums. The pace is fast but usually not frenetic like that of other Eastern European gypsy bands. A good example of this is "Sofiyski Tantz (Dance From Sofia)," an instrumental which, like a couple of the other numbers, sounds a little bit Middle Eastern and a little bit like a fast tango. Another fun instrumental is "Koshnitcharka (Basket Maker)," which has a real lilt to it and provides variety. The vocalists would not pass muster on American Idol, but they impress with their sincerity. This disc can be recommended to any fan of gypsy or Bulgarian music.

The Medley Brothers 1978 The Medley Brothers

Genre: Southern Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:57:44
Size: 120,11 MB

United States

In 1975, in the mountains of Roanoke, VA, Randy and Chuck Murphy created The Medley Brothers named after a very cheap brand of whiskey they had just completed. The brothers included guitar wizard Milton Swing and, in 1976, Randy Perkins to front the band on vocals and rhythm guitar.

The style of the band began as a kind of tribute to the “country-rock” sounds of the day including Gram Parsons, J.D. Souther, Merle Haggard and others. However, as the quartet began to write songs, the band took on its own very distinct identity. It was southern-rock, to be sure, but the songs offered catchy, accessible hooks. The Medley Brothers (some called them The Deadly Mothers because of their intimidating appearance) soon became local favorites. At one Roanoke show in 1977, a New York music enthusiast became a believer in The Medley Brothers and began bringing the band to New York City and its surrounding New York and New Jersey towns. Randy Perkins remembers, “The more we talked with a southern draw up north, the more we went over. So, when we first started playing New York, we would slow our speech down on purpose. They loved it because they considered us the real McCoy in southern-rock music, and they were right”. The band quickly became popular until they were in the New York area three weeks out of every month. The Red Rail in Nanuet became their “hot spot”, packing the place until they ended their shows at 3:00 or 4:00AM.

Various producers and studios became interested in the band, but it was Quad Studios in Pennsauken, NJ that gelled best and offered the most. In 1978, Quad brought the band in to record demos and produced surprisingly good takes of several songs written by Perkins, Swing and bassist Chuck Murphy. Through Quad’s many contacts with industry “big-wigs”, the demos were used to shop The Medley Brothers to a label. CBS/Columbia Records in New York took a real interest, sending their A&R reps to live shows. In 1978, the band auditioned for CBS in their 52nd Street studios.

Timing is everything, as they say, and The Medley Brothers were turned down because the label correctly felt a shift in what was the current musical trend and the story goes that Cheap Trick was signed, instead. After this let-down, The Medley Brothers continued to play frequently in New York and up and down the Eastern US, but the typical excesses of “the road” began to take their toll and the band dissolved on January 2, 1980 after a New Year’s Eve show. Swing and Perkins still play music regularly, though not together. Brother Chuck Murphy tragically died in a car crash and his brother and Medley Brother drummer, Randy, no longer plays.

review by Richard S. Ginell

Recording live at Los Angeles' Roxy club -- then a showcase for many of the hottest acts in pop -- was just the tonic that George Benson and his Breezin' band needed on this often jumping album. With unusually lively crowds (for a record-industry watering hole) shouting encouragement, the band gets deep into the four-on-the-floor funk and Benson digs in hard, his rhythmic instincts on guitar sharp as ever. The balance between vocals and instrumentals is about even -- George's voice sounds more throaty and soul-oriented than before -- and amid the new material, there is a revisit to a favored CTI-era instrumental, the lovely "Ode to a Kudu." This album also introduced "On Broadway," an extended stomping version of the Drifters' hit that would become Benson's climactic showstopper for years. The only superfluous element is the after-the-fact addition of Nick DeCaro's string synthesizer backdrop; the real Claus Ogerman-arranged thing would have been preferable if strings are a must.

Boz Scaggs 1971 Moments

Genre:
Rate: 294 kbps VBR / 44100
Time: 00:41:50
Size: 80,04 MB

United States

review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

If his 1969 eponymous debut found Boz Scaggs digging down deep and creating some gritty soul-rock, highlighted by Duane Allman's extended work-out on "Loan Me a Dime," his 1971 follow-up Moments -- his first album for CBS -- found him sketching out the blue-eyed soul that would eventually bring him fame when he streamlined it for 1976's Silk Degrees. Boz Scaggs was a Southern record, but Moments is thoroughly Californian, sun-bleached and brightly colored, easily gliding along smooth surfaces.

In the hands of producer Glyn Johns, Scaggs doesn't have any rough edges, and the change suits him well, as his soft, soulful croon almost cries out for a setting this lush, one that's just this side of being louche. Although Scaggs would go that down the gauche road in the '70s, Moments is far from the glitzy disco of Silk Degrees and its spawn. This is thoroughly a '60s hangover, right down to how the country shuffle of "Alone, Alone" slides between the warm soul grooves of the rest of the album. Most of this is decidedly laid-back -- the casually funky grind of "I Will Forever Sing (The Blues)" and slyly funny boogie of "Hollywood Blues" callbacks to the Southern strut of the debut, are the exception, not the rule -- and while this is mellow, it's not lazy: it's a relaxed exploration. By the time "Can I Make It Last (Or Will It Just Be Over)" quietly drifts away on extended instrumental coda, setting like a sun into the ocean, Scaggs has started down the path toward his signature blue-eyed soul.

Boris Kovac & Ladaaba Orchest are from Yugoslavia. Ladaaba stands for La Danza Apocalypsa Balcanica.

The songs, as a whole, have a feeling of last moment, a feeling of something important terminating. This is the music of the last party. On "Begin-ing", we are asked "to imagine there is only one starry night left till the end of the world... What would we do?" Really, I don't know. What would I do? What would you do? Something did terminate but not everything. The last song takes us on a new journey to a vague destination. Maybe for the better, maybe for the worse, but all is not terminated.

These Balkan tangos are, I don't know how to say it otherwise, they are important. They got here just in time. They have tastes of tango, gypsy music, avant-garde jazz and rumba. There is a good measure of energy and hope, along with the bittersweet sadness. (Charles-Antoine Caron)

Silver Creek's debut record is an ambitious full length journey into a the nostalgic realm of Southern rock and roll. Drawing heavily from influences that include The Marshall Tucker Band, The Black Crowes, The Rolling Stones and Canada's own Blue Rodeo, About Time is a warm and heartfelt attempt to capture a modern look at classic sound.

The songs on the record are simple compositions that convey fundamental truths of the human experience. Topics of love, heartache, soulful summertime musings, and the cold foreboding Canadian winter mix with heartfelt lyrics and catchy melodies to shape what the Ottawa Citizen called "a solid and rollicking debut."

Donna Hopkins 2003 Free To Go

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:59:15
Size: 135,54 MB

United States

review by Hal Horowitz

The debut from Georgia (by way of Alabama) singer/songwriter/guitarist Donna Hopkins is a long-awaited effort from an artist well-known for her weekly live gigs in and around her Atlanta home base. Blues-rockers who read liner notes closely will recognize her name from two vocal contributions to Tinsley Ellis' Hell or High Water 2002 release. But even Hopkins' fans would probably not expect her first album to be so well-produced and conceived. Shifting away from the barroom blues she plays live, Free to Go is a polished yet gutsy stab at Southern blue-eyed soul of the Bonnie Bramlett variety. Hopkins' tough, burnished voice has a Susan Tedeschi edge to it, but her music is more swampy, atmospheric, and diverse.

The nearly seven-minute title track with its layered guitars, ominous organ, and oozing sensuality, is the album's centerpiece, but all of the tracks are as impressive. These songs aren't just blueprints, but fully formed, melodically mature statements about survival and growing up on the poor side of the tracks. Far from being overly sentimental, they exude a proud, hopeful assurance, helped immensely by Hopkins' natural, hardscrabble voice, and Bryan Cole's sympathetic production. Like The Band, these songs creep up on you, but the strong choruses, and Hopkins' emotionally charged presence, make them instantly likeable. With its bottleneck acoustic guitar and easily surging chorus, the album's first single, "Dirt Alabama Road," received some local airplay, and the Georgia Satellites/ Stonesy rocking of "U-Haul You Back" is a sure dancefloor filler. But it's the slower, less upbeat tunes, like "Everything Money Can't Buy," and the opening "Don't Ask Why," that are more impressive. The beautifully recorded sound is clean but not slick, especially for a low-budget, locally produced and distributed project. Even though the reprise of "Everything Money Can't Buy" -- sung as a duet with Hopkins' young daughter -- is a little cloying, the closing gospel-reggae of "I'll Fly Away" doesn't really mesh with the rest of the album, and the Hank Williams Sr. cover on which Hopkins' sings backup is extraneous, even as a bonus track.

Free to Go proves that, even on her first album, Donna Hopkins is already focused and experienced enough to go big time.
