Al Garrett 1999 Out Of Bad Luck

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:41:06
Size: 93,95 MB

United States

biography by Richard Skelly

The 1980s and '90s brought about a blues recording boom that brought some well-deserved attention to veteran blues musicians: People like CeDell Davis, R.L. Burnside, Johnnie Bassett, and Robert "Bilbo" Walker found themselves on the road again, in demand at summer blues festivals and booked on extensive tours of big and small clubs around the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Although Al Garrett had been on the Los Angeles club scene since the late '50s, extensive touring under his own name had eluded him, other than in California. Garrett's debut album, Out of Bad Luck, was released in 1999 on the New York City-based Fedora Records. Garrett was born in Memphis, TN, on August 26, 1934. His first exposure to blues came via his father, blues piano player, guitarist, and singer Alfred Garrett Sr. Garrett began playing guitar as a ten-year old, playing along with and learning from his dad. In high school, Garrett got to know B.B. King, who was brought in to perform by WDIA DJ "Professor" Nat D. Williams. Garrett moved with his family to Los Angeles in 1957, and the then-busting-at-the-seams blues club scene provided a safe launch for Garrett's career. That same year, he entered the military and was invited to join a jazz trio as a bassist. After leaving the military, Garrett's talents as a bassist (he had a thorough grasp of guitar techniques by this point) caught the attention of vocalist Roy Brown, who hired him for his road band.

Once off the road, Garrett found plenty of work back home in L.A., accompanying musicians like Pee Wee Crayton, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Smokey Wilson, and Lowell Fulson. Garrett played with Wilson's band for a decade at the Pioneer Club, where people like George "Harmonica" Smith, Pete Lewis, and Rod Piazza would regularly sit in. Garrett recorded in the 1960s with C.C. Griffin for the Allegro, Movin', and Jewel labels, but he didn't record under his own name until he recorded Out of Bad Luck in 1999 for Fedora. Through the 1960s and '70s, Garrett led his own band, Al Garrett & the Rhythm Rockers, an eight-piece group that often included members of Ray Charles' various bands when they weren't out on the road. In the 1980s and '90s, Garrett remained primarily a West Coast blues musician, touring constantly in small clubs. His longtime friend Robert "Bilbo" Walker brought him to the attention of executives at Fedora and, appropriately, Walker plays bass on Out of Bad Luck. Garrett, now nearing 70, is clearly no spring chicken, yet after all these years, on his first album under his own name, he pays homage to the artists who've inspired him throughout his long and varied career, including Magic Sam, B.B. King, Lowell Fulson, Jimmy McCracklin, and Wayne Bennett. He covers familiar blues fare in his own soul-blues style, including tunes like "Blue Shadows Falling," "May I Have a Talk With You," "Last Night," and "Sail On."

Tim Brooks & The Alien Sharecroppers 2002 Back In The Game

Genre: Southern Rock
Rate: 256 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:57:58
Size: 106,17 MB

United States

BACK IN THE GAME is another perfect example of the real stuff, and it's pretty clear that down-to-earth classic rock made by Southeners from Texas to Florida is here to stay. There is a very enthusiastic scene supporting this special kind of music that the fans have chosen as their way of life. One of the best examples for the vitality of the music is Macon, Georgia's Tim Brooks & The Alien Sharecroppers hailing from the heartland of southern-rock.

In 2001 they toured Europe and were blown away by the genuine love the audiences in Germany, Holland, or Switzerland showed for the music. Guitar giant Tim Brooks and his friends have now delivered a follow-up that is just as good as their first effort - if not better. BACK IN THE GAME is an album that combines musical intensity, a Southern-style musical soul, and geniune craft. The Big Guy (he really is huge!) remains one of the most stunning slide players in the Duane Allman tradition (his phenomenal success with Guitar Player magazine's spectacular "25th Anniversary Ultimate Competition" is not forgotten). He's also one self-confident cat and even GP's big time "Ultimate Guitar Concert" at San Francisco's Warfield Theatre, with legends like Steve Morse, Ry Cooder, Harvey Mandel, John Lee Hooker and Gregg Allman, did not cause him cold feet."Tim Brooks brought the house down" - GP editor Dominic Milano reportedly said about the show. It was a pretty impressive cast, indeed, and certainly a night to be remembered. After that event, Tim Brooks won the "best slide player" category three times in a row before Gov't Mule's Warren Haynes had his share of winning. And it was Gregg Allman himself who really made an effort to get the Georgia band as support act for a couple of his solo shows.

Tim Brooks has been on the local scene since 1994, when he and his brother Gregg released an album as "The Brothers Brooks". He has extensively paid his dues as an opening act for artists ranging from Muddy Waters to Steve Morse. He played countless jams with many Southern artists from Dickey Betts to The (Dixie) Dregs. Special importance in terms of influences must be given to one band in partiular, The Allman Brothers Band. And although Duane and Berry Oakley have long been gone and the fact that Gregg has gone through many personal problems (last year's sacking of Betts made for some bad blood again) there's no other band that has come close to the Allmans in terms of confederate rock spirit and high-flying jam power. And still no other guitarist from the South has been as influential to other Southern slide players as the late Duane Allman while no other vocalist from this genre of music has come up with as much soul power as Gregg Allman. Tim Brooks, the new guy from Macon, is continuing the tradition in dedicated fashion. His main axe is a Gibson Les Paul Custom and his playing is not overly sweet, but bears the heavy imprint of Southern bluesrock fire instead. This is the sound Tim Brooks is truly in love with.

BACK IN THE GAME nicely opens with a groove inspired by Lynyrd Skynyrd ("Shame On Me") and it's clear pretty soon that versatiliy is truly one of the band virtues. A bluesy Southern Boogie with Allmanesque slide sounds ("High, Dry And Blue") is next, followed by the ringing of classic Outlaws guitar sounds ("Back In The Game"), and a touch of jazz à la Atlanta Rhythm Section ("Southern Maiden"). But these guys are no copycats, they can incorporate all these various idioms of the music into their own sound.

In the end, it's an album that is of one piece and a lot of feeling went into it. Even "non-confederates" should be able to detect this...

And it doesn't stop here: Tim Brooks & The Alien Sharecroppers deliver a relaxed Dobro instrumental ("Boating Down The Ocmulgee"), an energetic 12 bar rocker ("You Ain't Listening"), an exquisitely dramatic blues number in 6/8 time with more than a touch of Gregg in the vocal department ("Hanging By A Thread") and even a special homage to Beatle George Harrison (R.I.P.), a nice cover of "Think For Yourself" - a song from the Beatles' classic RUBBER SOUL LP. They still like to do covers and their Dylan interpretations were highlights on SEE ROCK CITY. Now this is topped by the finale of the new record. At the end of BACK IN THE GAME there's an absolute peak in terms of intensity: a 15-minute live version of Neil Young's "Down By The River". One of the timeless classics of American rock.

So turn your system on and pump up the volume for the new album from a real southern-rock outfit from Macon, GA, hometown to Little Richard, Otis Redding and The Allman Brothers Band. That's a pretty impressive legacy of music and even if some of the new music sounds like a flashback into the heyday of classic southern-rock, it's paired with a fresh spirit and a shot of youthful energy. BACK IN THE GAME really gets down to business yet again and Tim Brooks & The Alien Sharecroppers are convinced that this music is made for the new millenium. (http://www.taxim.com)

Album Notes

Like "Absolutely Live Vol. I", the main part of this CD is from one concert. With "Absolutely Live Vol. I" the location was Norway. This time the recordings took place in Lille and Montpellier, France - originally released as "C'est La Vie".

Everything recorded on this CD is 100% live, and a lot of the songs were actually written on the road - as I spent most of that year on the road. The songs represent both sides of being on a long tour - the fast songs represent the hectic speedy moods you get into as you try to keep schedules that are often not human, and the slow songs represent the melancholic moods that break through sometimes as you miss the people and things that you love.

Again, like on "Absolutely Live Vol. I", some bonus tracks have been added - studio outtakes, live radio performances and concert performances - all previously unreleased material and all digitally re-mastered. There was a little more space left over after the main concert this time, leaving room for seven bonus tracks!

I hope that between these two releases I have managed to capture the essence of my "Albatross years". From my first single "Alberta" on this collection to the last note of "Tempted" on Absolutely Live Vol. I" it's been an incredible journey. There is blood, sweat & tears all over these songs - and I wouldn't have it any other way!!

To find out how this incredible journey continues, check out "The Peace Within" CD for the new "Celtic-Blues" sound of Barry Mc Cabe & Davy Spillane.

Robin Trower 1997 Someday Blues

Genre: Blues
Rate: 192 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:39:23
Size: 54,01 MB

United Kingdom

review Greg Prato

Robin Trower's peak commercial period occurred during the mid-'70s, when the bluesy guitarist specialized in a style that relied heavily on the power of the almighty riff (as evidenced by just about any selection from his best known release, 1974's Bridge of Sighs). But on his 1997 offering, Someday Blues, Trower tries a different approach, as he cuts back on the Jimi Hendrix-esque riffing, and focuses more on Albert King-style licks, and letting Hammond organ fill in much of the open spaces.

This approach is best sampled on "Feels So Bad" (which features some great vocalizing by Trower -- who handles all singing on the album as well) and the slow-burning title track. And for fans of a classic, searing Fender Strat tone, the album-closing "Sweet Little Angel" is a must-hear. While there's nothing here that matches the six-string pyrotechnics of, say, "Day of the Eagle," Trower still proves to be a major blues-rock force on Someday Blues. It's just that now Trower puts an added emphasis on the "blues" rather than the "rock."
