Burnin Red Ivanhoe 1970 Burnin Red Ivanhoe

Genre: Progressive Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 48000
Time: 00:53:02
Size: 110,17 MB

Denmark

The selftitled second Studio Album from Danish act Burnin´ Red Ivanhoe was released in 1970. The debut album from 1969 called M144 is a really excellent album and one of the most important Danish progressive releases. Burnin´ Red Ivanhoe even enjoyed some success in both UK, Germany and the rest of the Scandinavian countries which was ( and still is) very rare for a Danish band.

The music is bluesy jazz/ rock very much in the vein of bands like Colosseum and Audience. On this second album there is a much more dominant experimental jazz/ rock touch to songs like Canaltrip and Secret Oyster Service compared to the style on the debut, while the blues influence is clearly heard on Rotating Irons and Across the Windowsill. Near the Sea is a mellow song. Gong-Gong, The Elephant Song is also in experimental jazz/ rock territory with dominant brass work. The main theme reminds me a bit about The Mothers of Invention ( King Kong). There is also a harmonica solo in that song.

The musicianship is excellent. Burnin´ Red Ivanhoe was and still is one of the most accomplished bands in Denmark. The two brass players Kim Menzer and Karsten Vogel dominate the music but the vocals from Ole Fick which this time is solely sung in English are also really good. Jess Stæhr on bass and Bo Thrige Andersen on drums also makes for a really tight and excellent rythm section.

The production is excellent. Organic, pleasant and well sounding. (Umur)

Time: 00:31:14
Size: 35,74 MB

Review by Bill Dahl

Lonnie Brooks' pervasive 1950s bayou blues roots, laid bare and rocking hard. "Family Rules" was highly influential to the blossoming swamp-pop movement soon sweeping southern Louisiana; "The Crawl," "I Got It Made (When I Marry Shirley Mae)," "Roll, Roll, Roll," and "Knocks Me Out" (the latter one of his Mercury singles) drive with youthful abandon. The youngster's ears were wide-open -- he even covered Harlan Howard's country ditty "Pick Me Up on Your Way Down," investing it with serious swamp angst.

A Girl's a Gun 2012 No Decisions

A Girl's a Gun is a Sydney-based rock and roll band, with a sound coming out of the same Southern Rock soup that most likely influenced the Stones while they were busy influencing The Black Crowes: sexy, fuzzy, and full of blues.

When it comes to A Girl’s a Gun the girl in question is lead vocalist Lucia Neville ‘Chi’ who fronts the band with a huge rock voice that just doesn’t stop. Chi has the kind of voice that would win reality TV talent competitions, if she gave enough of shit to enter, and the band’s sound is rounded out by twin guitars, bass, drums, big riffs, spaghetti western, Texas blues, thumping beats and fat bottom end.

In 2012 A Girl’s A Gun released their first single 'No Decisions' to great response from their burgeoning fan base. The track featuring a heart-thumping Motown groove and the tasty addition of keyboard by Mark O'Connor (Wendy Mathews, James Reyne bands). (http://www.agirlsagun.com)

Catapilla 1972 Changes

Genre: Progressive Rock
Rate: 125 kbps VBR / 44100
Time: 00:37:55
Size: 33,80 MB

United Kingdom

The second and sadly last album from Catapilla features only changes in personnel it would seem, as the music is equally as vibrant and interesting as on their debut album - gone are Thierry Reinhardt and Hugh Eaglestone on tenor sax, Dave Taylor on bass, Malcolm Frith on drums, the line-up now featuring new members Ralph Rolinson on organ and electric piano, Carl Wassard on electric bass and Brian Hanson on drums. The sleeve is a die-cutaway design featuring our Catapilla nibbling on a huge lettuce leaf this time. The new sound seems more ordered than on the previous album featuring four long tracks, the same atmospheric sound from Anna Meek, even more so on the first track "Reflections", a rather eerie ethereal piece punctuated with sax solos and featuring some nice Argent style Hammond Organ passages, and finishes with a very atmospheric vocal from Anna ;

"In the eye, I saw myself...In the heart of the river was reflected,In the eye, I saw myself...In the heart of the river was reflected, a hole,of liquid movement...of liquid movement...of liquid movement...In the eye that made moves,he saw himself...In the heart of the river was reflected,In the heart of the river was reflected,on the movement, rain, hole, a river...".

The next track "Charing Cross" comments on the social climate found on the London Underground, is characteristically reverberating, the track begins in a slow atmospheric mood then breaks into a fast rock groove which leads into a Floydian style guitar solo; "Cross-legged in the corners,in the Underground,in the Underground, the train moves, the train goes,Eyes cross directions,Eyes cross directions, they sympathize, they sympathize,beneath...beneath..."..... "Trouble in your eyes, awakes cool to my eyes, sources found after searching round. Up the tunnels Up the tunnels same on the plain part direct after time forth, the first time, the last buffet beneath...beneath..."

..... it's really not that gloomy on the good ol' toob!

Side 2's strangely titled "Thank Christ for George" is a very phsychedelically influenced sounding track, a twelve minute hypnotic groove punctuated by some wah wah fuzz guitar, leading into a Jazz Rock rhythm supported by characteristically mysterious and gloomy vocals from Anna Meek and an eerie sax solo;

"Her remains, men in some tomb,he hands off a last light.I heard a clinchedmeans words you fenced with,to protect.to protect. An image, liberally coiled, around him.He started to tenderly unfold. She failed,at least she learned. He knows a restricted silenced tune. Drifting to you at night, start right. An image, carefully foiled, around him."

The last song on the album, a moody instrumental "It Could Only Happen to Me" begins with a solo sax and electric guitar, building into a rather repetitive theme, played at different keys, it includes a good Gilmour style guitar solo but is a rather an unremarkable end to a great album, which pairs with the first one perfectly - you really need both in your collection! (mystic fred)

Nine Below Zero 1980 Live At The Marquee

Genre: Blues
Rate: 224 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:13:15
Size: 135,05 MB

United Kingdom

Review by Bruce Eder

Nine Below Zero had only released one record prior to this live album, a self-produced EP, but they'd already gotten over a hundred gigs under their belt by the time the U.K. division of A&M Records signed them. The label wisely decided that a live recording was the way to break this band. The result was a classic artifact of the late British punk scene, a searing blues-rock set that recalled the energy of the early performances of the Rolling Stones, the Pretty Things, and the Animals, but presented in a manner closer to the punk era that had just come to a close and which slotted right in with the contemporary mod revival. Anyone who enjoyed the first three or four Dr. Feelgood albums should definitely try Live at the Marquee on for size.

The covers range all over the R&B map, including Willie Dixon (whose "I Can't Quit You Baby" gets a killer extended rendition that never lets up in intensity), Holland-Dozier-Holland, and Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs, interspersed with a handful of band originals, of which lead guitarist Dennis Greaves' wild, crunchy "Stop Your Naggin'" is the highlight. And the recording itself strikes a perfect balance between a close, personal band sound and a fair level of room ambience and crowd presence.

Chain Lightning 1999 Ain't Just Whistlin' Dixie

Genre: Southern Rock
Rate: 128 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:49:09
Size: 45,00 MB

United States

When you imagine great Southern Rock, bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot and The Marshall Tucker Band will likely come to mind. When you think of great guitar rock, Stevie Ray Vaughan, ZZ Top and Kenny Wayne Shepherd float to the top. Chain Lightning melds these into a kickin show that will blow away the audience with heart thumping sound.

Chain Lightning was founded in 1994 by Gregory Lee (guitar) and Chuck Worden (former lead singer). For ten years they worked with many national acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Marshall Tucker and many more. In 1996 Chain Lightning released the “No Excuses” cassette. In 1999 Chain Lightning recorded their first CD “Ain’t Just Whistlin’ Dixie”. Chuck’s untimely death in 2004 caused the band to reform over the years. Greg’s fifteen year old son, Monty, has joined the band and the stage is electric when the father/son duo play those screamin dual guitar solos. On keyboards is John Mika who has been with Chain Lightning for many years.

Recently the band has added a few new members that have lengthy histories on Minnesota’s local music stages, Steve Allen on drums, Jim King on bass and Tom Nordstrom (Nordy) on lead vocals. Adding soul to that southern feel are Chain Lightning’s new background singers The Hipettes (Kat, Dee & Red). (http://www.chainlightningband.com)

Now The Inmates are in the groove and everything they do is more or less effective. So Heatwave in Alaska has almost classical rock sound and all the songs are made as close to the roots as it is only possible. And although there are no surprises there are no disappointments either. (Babe_N_Co)
