Don 'Sugarcane' Harris 1971 Fiddler On The Rock
Genre: Rock
Rate: 247 kbps VBR / 44100
Time: 00:38:15
Size: 65,41 MB
The rare 1971 “Fiddler On The Rock” album by the late, great blues-rock violinist Don ‘Sugar Cane’ Harris - featuring guitarist Harvey Mandel, bassist Larry Taylor and drummer Paul Lagos - and recorded in Germany when all were on tour as members of the John Mayall Band.
Pasadena-born "Sugarcane" Harris was half of the R&B duo Don & Dewey in the mid-50s, writing a number of rock & roll hits, including ‘Farmer John’. Apart from his time with Mayall, he is best known for his work with Frank Zappa on the albums “Hot Rats”, “Burnt Weeny Sandwich”, and “Weasels Ripped My Flesh”.
Harris claimed to have assembled his perfect group for the ‘Fiddler’ album and the label’s producer Joachim E. Berendt later commented that “almost all the pieces that Sugar Cane plays on our record are first takes – the four musicians were so well attuned to each other.” The quartet recorded five Harris originals. Tiny Grimes 1974 Some Groovy Fours
Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:56:52
Size: 130,06 MB
With the exception of a Sonet album from 1977, this was guitarist Tiny Grimes' last recording as a leader. Grimes is surprisingly still in peak form and is well showcased in a quartet with pianist Lloyd Glenn, bassist Roland Lobligeois and drummer Panama Francis. Although there are some blues, as usual, Grimes also gets to stretch out "Lester Leaps In" and "I Found a New Baby," which show how strong a swing-based improviser he could be. (iTunes)

This picture of me as a child holding the American flag was taken in the South, where Blues was born. A colored boy acting as color guard to red, white and blues musings. Nothing symbolizes America more than its flag and no people wanted to be American more than my people.
Blues is Americana music, coming from those dark places of wisdom an oral testament to our self determination. It is a spiritual commodity of exchange, a tool that we use to negotiate and navigate our way through the marketplace of life. And because of Blues, I am free to be me. So I don't have to behave.
And I am happy, happy as a runaway slave. (Mighty Mo Rodgers)

Super Chikan 2000 What You See
Genre: Blues

Review by Chris Nickson
Is Super Chikan (aka James Johnson) a soul man or a blues man? And where's the line between the two anyway? On What You See, Chikan certainly blurs them:
The title cut roars out of the blocks as if it has come straight from the funk store, a greasy wah-wah riff over some blues licks (although one of those licks sounds worryingly like the Stranglers' "Peaches") and an infectious backbeat. "Ain't Nobody" brings in some great horns, straight out of the Stax studio, while "El Camino" comes close to surf blues over a New Orleans second-line rhythm. In other words, Super Chikan isn't a big believer in boundaries, and he continues to cross them at will throughout the disc -- which makes for some wonderful listening. "Okie Doak" is pure soul-blues, "Good Thing" could teach a lot of rockers how to approach the blues -- it needs to be laid-back like this -- and "You Said" gives it up on one of the funkiest basslines ever to emerge. There's plenty of '60s and '70s influence running through this, like the playful 12-bar synthesizer line on "Willie Brown Jr.," which tends to distract from some fine blues guitar work from the man himself, stretching out a little and showing excellent taste and chops. "Big Boy Now" takes an archetypal blues riff, and while it doesn't add anything new, it does generate plenty of excitement, with the inevitable rooster crows (a Chikan trademark), and a humorous lyric about country music and yodeling. It all rounds out with "Fighting Cock," with a riff any bluesman would give his eye teeth for, not taken too seriously (another Chikan trademark), stripped-down to the point of falling apart, and a guaranteed good time for all.
Soul to blues and back again, Chikan knows his way around the rootsy side of music.

As good a place to begin your Casey Jones collection as any, since his vocals remain strong and his songwriting is as pleasing as ever. The title cut, "I Know I Got a Good Woman," and the sinuous "She Treats Me Right" all make highly favorable impressions.

This CD is probably one of the best gypsy music CDs I have ever listened to, if you find Taraf De Haiduks a little bit too much violin, this is the CD for you. The music is so strong that the language seems to become a rather secondary issue, and besides the language is beaytiful. (Roxy Zimmer)

Eddie Martin 2007 Contrary Mary

Time: 00:49:07

Release Notes:
Ripping slide guitar and a genre-sweep from classic rock to country blues-rock map the contours of the latest tough but slick album from the UK songwriter Eddie Martin. This album rocks with exciting grooves and hooks-aplenty, masterful slide guitar and harmonica playing. What raises the yardstick above a good-time party album – even though it works on that level if you like – is the songwriting, which combines lyrical depth and passion.
All 10 tracks are original and feature Martin’s trademark gritty emotive vocals and excellent musicianship all-round. It’s a must-buy party record for all generations….but there’s lyrical depth to ponder as well as grooves to move your feet to. (http://www.bluebloodrecords.com)

Francis Rocco Prestia 1998 ...Everybody On The Bus
Genre: Funk
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:48:52

Hmmm...well, let's see. You've got Rocco (bassist for the legendary soul/funk band, Tower of Power), you've got Bruce Conte, you've got Chester Thompson on keyboards, you've got David Garibaldi and Herman Matthews on drums, you've got Biner, Champlin, Grillo, and the incomparable Brent Carter handling the vocals, you've got Kupka/Castillo collaborating on a couple of the tracks:
Hmmm...this is Tower without the Power of the horn section. But what a nice and refreshing change it is! There isn't a throw-away track on this CD, but a couple bear special mention: Brent Carter just really shines on Double Identity and I was especially impressed with Tamara Champlin's vocals on Express Yourself--reminiscent of the Staple Singers. Baby Don't Go features a strong bass line that actually makes you feel the plucking of the guitar strings. I'm So Glad has a unique presence that strikes me every time I hear it. There are also two worthy instrumentals that allow the musicians to shine each in their own right. You ought to get on the bus if you haven't already--it's worth the trip! (amazon.com)
