The contemporary Chicago blues scene remains a prosperous one, anchored by several highly successful clubs (including the two Blue Chicagos) and a number of prolific record labels. Sam Myers 2004 Coming From The Old School
Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:08:37
Size: 156,92 MB
Review by Chris Nickson
It's taken Sam Myers fully 50 years to make his first solo album. But he's no stranger to either stage or studio, having worked with Elmore James and Anson Funderburgh. For his debut he's assembled a top-notch band, led by guitarist Mel Brown, to work not so much behind him as with him. Brown is a standout as an accompanist, offering wonderful decoration to "I Got the Blues" and "Burning Fire." But understandably, it's Myers who's the star of the show, and his driving harmonica playing carries its own momentum, as on his version of Rice Miller's "Ninety Nine." But there's also a very pleasing grit to his singing, whether on the slow and deeply soulful"After Hours When the Joint Is Closed," or "Waitin' On Your Mama," which could have come directly from the Chicago school of blues. It might have taken him five decades to get to this, but from the music on the disc, not a single minute was wasted.

Small Jackets 2006 Walking The Boogie

The Second record, Walking The Boogie (2006) saw the departure of Piatto who was replaced by his student protégé Fabio Gardini (aka Eddy Current). The change brought a more mature sound and attracted the attention of the elite Scandinavia rock scene. Both Nicke “Royale” Anderson and Robert “Strings” Dahlquist” of the Hellacopters guested on the album bringing international attention to the power-chord four-piece. The disc boasted several breakthrough tracks including the bass-driven “My Surprise,” the massively hooky “Leave Me Alone” and the Ted Nugent injected “Born To Die.” By this time Go Down Records was in full stride releasing several quality discs a year including OJM’s classic Under The Thunder, Fuel From Hell’s Fill You Up With Five Star Gasoline and the garage punk icons Not Moving retrospective Live in the 80’s. The Jackets were poised for the next big step, with solid backing and a flourishing fan base. (http://www.cuttingedgerocks.com)

Tail Dragger 2005 My Head Is Bald
Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:00:52
Size: 139,24 MB
Review by Steve Leggett
James Yancy Jones, known professionally as Tail Dragger, is on the radical edge of contemporary blues simply by not changing a thing since he first hit the Chicago blues scene from his native Arkansas in the 1960s. A Howlin' Wolf protégé, Jones has grown into his role as an elder statesman, and in an era when drums are processed and guitar leads are as much synthesizer as they are strings, his "just the old blues, thank you, Ma'am," approach is downright refreshing. My Head Is Bald, a live set from Vern's Friendly Lounge on Chicago's West side, is as comfy as a pair of old wool socks, and while Jones isn't particularly innovative -- he still sounds like an ever-so-slightly polished-up version of the Wolf -- his version of the blues is so familiar and devoid of flash that it feels lived in and real, and original songs like "Tend to Your Business" and "Prison Blues" seem like they've been around forever. A Tail Dragger show is predictable, but that's the charm of it. This is blues in the neighborhood bar. You wouldn't want it to sound any other way.

Matti Norlin 2010 Live - Blues 3 Trappor Upp
Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:10:20
Size: 160,92 MB
This is the latest album from Sweden's Matti Norlin. It's his 4th blues CD and his first since 2002. The album was recorded live at Blues 3 Trappor Upp (3 Stairs Up) in Tranemo Sweden and features a number of Matti Norlin originals with a smattering of blues classics from the likes of Robert Johnson and Charlie Patton.
A couple of things stand out on this CD. The first is the camaraderie between Matti and his audience. Although the dialogue is in Swedish, there is obvious humour apparent and the participation between artist and fan is quite extraordinary. The second is Matti's astonishing guitar playing. As well as his picking, he also plays quite a mean slide. His forays into rag time are also quite sensational.
The set kicks off at a brisk pace. Two Norlin originals, "Mind Your Own Business" and "Mainstream Blues" split by Robert Johnson's "Up Jumped The Devil" and by now the audience are really lapping this up.
A change in tempo, any one for ragtime?. I've found another way to live and "Airy Man Blues" are brilliantly played. The Big Bill Broonzy number "How You Want It Done: is the albums highlight. Controlled tension at it's very best. A trio of Norlin originals are next up. "Biscuits" (I've never heard a blues number with references to baking powder before), "Not Allowed" and "Groovin" are real rootsy, gutsy numbers before we return to some more rag time in the shape of "Milkcow Blues Boogie" and "Piccolo Rag". Two Charlie Patton numbers, "Shake It and Break It" and "Bird Nest Bound" follow before Matti is joined by Fredrik Haake on assorted kitchen utensils (baking trays, saucepan lids and cymbal) The disc closes with a rabble rousing "Emigration Blues".
This has to be one of he best solo live albums I have ever heard. Those who were present witnessed something quite special. The rest of us will have to hear the CD, It's indispensable.. (Mike Lightfoot)

The Twistin' Tarantulas 2003 El Destroyo
Genre: Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:53:50
Size: 123,30 MB
Hey friends,
wanted to take a moment to tell you about the new full length CD from Detroit's bruise-a-billy kings, the TWISTIN' TARANTULAS. The new album is called "EL DESTROYO" and it's been released on the Adequate Music record label. It's far above 'adequate'! I'd say it's easily as good, if not better than, the original debut CD from Pistol Pete & Co (96's "ATTACK OF THE.."). A real nice blend of swing, rockabilly, barroom blues and country(!) beats layered with Pete's patented propulsive bass slaps and multiple guitar swatches -Pete's enlisted the assistance of Detroit's most talented guitarists: Marc "Stretch" Nischan, George "I look like J. Edgar Hoover" Friend and
"Country Casual" Chris Casello from the Starlight Drifters. I don't know if I'm giving out too much info, but I do know that even Pete hisself contributed a few "heavy" guitar licks to give the album a "ballsier" and "tougher" sound. 15 tracks (including one intro at the beginning) on this disc. So far I like "Never Do It Again," crowd favorite "Chateau Eau De Ghetto," "The Cage," the latin-o-billy flavoured "Birthday Suit" and the punk-fueled paean to a real hot 'Bettie,' "(You Look Like A) Hundred Bucks." Plenty of fist-pumpers and slow grinders for 'lovers only'! The title track will definitely satisfy your appetite for gigantic, rampaging masked Mexican robots gone wild on Spring Break (not AGAIN!)!
Will "El Destroyo" destroy your preconceived notions of what the Twistin' Tarantulas sound is and what they're capable of? Probably not, but it will make you appreciate the musical juggernaught that is Pistol Pete Midtgard and how in the face of overwhelming medical and personal difficulties he's persevered and has continued to succeeded fantastically. The music on this LP is attractive, autobiographical, aggressive and most importantly: FUN. I already like it lots better than the second disc ("Welcome To Our Underworld") and I have a feeling it'll keep the Twistin' Tarantulas wreaking havoc on unsuspecting cities and their knowing music fans for years to come. An excellent album that will undoubtedly please the current fans and bring back many of the old ones. (Del Villarreal "Go Kat, GO!")

Mary Flower 1996 Rosewood & Steel
Genre: Blues
Rate: 160 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:50:46
Size: 58,08 MB
Review by Bruce Eder
Rosewood & Steel has Flower putting her own special spin on music by Junior Parker ("Mystery Train"), Charlie Patton ("Pony Blues"), Skip James ("Cypress Grove Blues"), and Brooks Berry ("Can't Sleep For Dreaming"), along with a bunch of originals. Geoff Muldaur, Amos Garrett, Steve James, and Paul Geremia all contribute to various songs. Flower's singing is rich and husky, and her originals exploit the various sides of her musical personality, from playful to dark and moody (check out "Cock-A-Doodle Blues" and "Two Days Straight"), and all but one slots in perfectly with the covers on this collection. Her "Midnite Blue" vaguely recalls CSN's "4+20," with some gorgeous slide by Steve James, while she impresses and then some with her lap steel playing on the delightful "Roll On, Mississippi, Roll On" and Patton's searing "Pony Blues" (which also features Geremia's slide). The real surprise is "Mystery Train," which gets about the slowest, most lyrical treatment ever on record here.
