When Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown walked into the studio in the early '80s to record Alright Again!, he had already had an illustrious career by most standards. Yet, much of Gate's best output had been behind him by more than two decades; with Alright Again!, he set out to prove he was still a relevant artist. The album won Brown a Grammy, and its follow-up, One More Mile, was a Grammy-nominated record as well.

Texas Swing combines the two records, culling 17 tracks from the sessions. Listening to this album, it is easy to see why the songs had such impact. Never one to be pigeonholed, Brown and his backup band move from slick blues on "Frosty" and "One More Mile" to breezy swing reminiscent of the best big bands on Roy Milton's "Information Blues" and Brown's own "Dollar Got the Blues." As a listener, it is fascinating to hear Brown pull the tiny nuances out of his guitar, giving the instrumentals and solos previously unheard depth and confirming his position as a master musician.

There aren't many 75-year-old entertainers who rock with the intensity of Gatemouth Brown, a multi-instrumentalist from Louisiana who is a master of guitar, fiddle, viola, mandolin and harmonica. A look into Brown's history shows him leading a 23-piece orchestra in the late '40s, after a stint during the '20s and '30s as a Peacock Records recording artist. During the '60s, Brown traded in his guitar for a gun, signing on as a deputy sheriff in New Mexico. In 1974, at the age of 50, he jumped headfirst back into his music, and the rest is history.

Black Jack was originally released on the Music Is Medicine label in 1977, and explores the versatile Brown's love for Texas swing, featuring outstanding tracks laced with swing, big band, R&B and straight-up blues. Alternating between a smoking guitar and a fiery fiddle, Brown drives these 12 songs like a stock-car at NASCAR's Darlington, fast as he can go but still in absolute control of the vehicle. From the funky guitar picking of "Chickenshift," to the bluesy title cut "Black Jack," Brown burns brightly. The soulful "Dark End of the Hallway" is another standout track, as is the intense closing instrumental, "Up Jumped the Devil."

For anyone who had previously tacked the blues label on Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's considerable cowboy hat, now is the time to reconsider. While Brown is indeed a master bluesman, he is equally adept at handling Texas swing, country, jazz and rock & roll. A man of many talents who shows absolutely zero signs of slowing down.

Before Gate was able to rebuild a following stateside, he frequently toured Europe. He recorded the contents of this inexorably swinging set in France in 1973 with all-star backing by keyboardists Milt Buckner and Jay McShann, saxists Arnett Cobb and Hal Singer, among others. Brown indulges his passion for Louis Jordan by ripping through "Ain't That Just like a Woman" and "Ain't Nobody Here but Us Chickens" and exhibits his immaculate fretwork on the torrid title item.

Any CD which starts out with Blues Power featuring Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown on vocals, Eric Clapton on guitar, and Leon Russell playing piano and doing vocals is worth a listen to. Long Way Home continues to impress with every track.

Brown demonstrates his musical skills, and careful choice of music. His all star cast includes Clapton, Russell, Ry Cooder, John Loudermilk (who wrote Tobacco Road and does the vocals on the CD), Sonny Landreth and Maria Muldaur. Great tracks besides Blues Power are Don't Think Twice with Maria Muldaur doing vocals with Gatemouth, Mean and Evil with Leon Russell sharing the stage with Gatemouth and of course Tobacco Road.

This is a great CD for a blues or rock fan. (booknblueslady)
