Brainbox 1969 Brainbox
Genre: Rock

review by Joe Viglione
Holland's Brainbox was part of the Benelux Invasion consisting of Stockholm's ABBA, Shocking Blue from the Netherlands, Denmark's the Savage Rose, and, of course, Blue Swede, a convergence a bit more subtle than the British Invasion and spanning over a decade. While H.P. Lovecraft kept changing members around the drummer, this band would release a record with totally new people in 1972, that work entitled Parts.
Yet the original Brainbox does have qualities somewhat resembling the earlier H.P. Lovecraft, and is a worthwhile collection of musically diverse and eclectic performances. The decent liner notes call this "progressive pop," and in some respects it is, though they shift gears from the Simon & Garfunkel classic "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" to the 17-minute plus original "Sea of Delight," and take lots of other directions in between. The Damned had a song called "New Rose," which is where the French record label got its name, and there was the aforementioned Savage Rose, but Brainbox start the album with "Dark Rose," a blend of Jethro Tull meets the Mothers of Invention. Brainbox ups the ante by sliding into Tim Hardin and a very credible cover of "Reason to Believe" a full two years before Rod Stewart would get a B-side hit with it (the original A-side of the "Maggie Mae" single), they pull off a chameleon-like change on this to become folk rockers. Casimirz Lux has a very appealing voice with a bit of Stewart's rasp, making "Reason to Believe" a highlight of the album. The liner notes credit Jimmy Smith for writing "Baby, What You Want Me to Do," but the tracking properly gives it to Jimmy Reed, and his Top 40 1960 hit is as bluesy as you can get here, the band changing styles yet again and showing their grasp and appreciation of American music. From progressive rock to folk-rock to blues-rock to the folk-pop of Simon & Garfunkel, who is to say they weren't rewriting Blind Faith's lengthy "Do What You Like" by way of "Sea of Joy" for their epic "Sea of Delight"? The album is a dense amalgam of sounds and themes from England and America, but is reverent in its borrowing and presentation. Brainbox's rendition of "Summertime" sounds like Deep Purple adding heavy keyboard sounds and slowing up the Billy Stewart 1966 hit reinvention of the Gershwin tune from Porgy & Bess. Of course, Janis Joplin did it two years earlier than Brainbox and psychedelicized it with an immortal performance -- but a good song is a good song, and this is Jan Akkerman before he would give us "Hocus Pocus" from Focus, and that fact makes the album more than just a curiosity. Since these gents were so enamoured of American music, it seems credible that they took the Vanilla Fudge sound -- famous in Europe a year before it hit in America -- and put it on a Janis Joplin favorite.
Released with five bonus tracks on CD, including additional versions of "Sea of Delight," this is much more than the "bargain bin" item many American record buyers passed it off as. It's a real diamond in the rough.

This album was released in 1971 and it really blends that blues rock style with jazz to amazing results. The guitarist adds a little organ and mellotron to this recording, but make no mistake this is a guitar/drum led album with some excellent sax added to the mix. Sadly the band broke up while working on their second record because the guitarist wanted to go into a more jazz direction while the drummer wanted to go into a more rock vein. This was recorded at Dieter Dirks famous studio in Germany of course.
"China" is simply pure Krautrock. It opens with a gong before we get this hypnotic, trippy beat while the psychedelic guitar does it's thing. Just a pleasure to listen to. Some chaos to end it. "Devil's Dream" has a 60's vibe in the intro and outro as the guitar cries out while vocals come and go. It gets jazzy 2 minutes in as sax, relentless bass and light drums take over. Great sound 4 minutes in when the guitar comes back. "Nervous Creek" rocks out pretty good. Vocals and drums lead the way. It changes to a jazzy flavour 3 minutes in. Love the guitar after 4 minutes as the intro melody comes back.
"It's No Use To Run" again kills me with the guitar. It just sounds so good that's all. Vocals come in as drums pound. Harmonica 1 1/2 minutes in. The guitar rips it up after 3 minutes. "I Want You" opens with guitar and harp. Cool sound. Drums and vocals take over. Ballad-like until sax and then some killer guitar arrive. Sax sounds great 3 minutes in. Some excellent bass and organ follow. Sax ends it. "Archie's Blues" is named after the lead singer. This is a straight up blues track. The vocals and guitar are very much in that style. He says "Check this guitar boys" as the guitarist then makes his guitar cry the blues. "Material Darkness" opens with heavy bass, sax, guitar and drums. Really good sound to this part. Vocals a minute in. Check out the chunky bass after 1 1/2 minutes. Mellotron after 2 1/2 minutes. Nice. The tempo continues to change and it kicks back into gear after 4 minutes. You play with taste, talent, energy and good attention to tone. The band are tight, and the players are very good. I enjoyed your vocals too!” (Bruce Iglauer / Alligator Records - USA)

Powder Blues 2004 Blues + Jazz = Blazz!
Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:36:38
Size: 83,83 MB
Album Notes
For nearly three decades Powder Blues has been Canada’s favorite blues band. Their music incorporates elements of Swing, Blues, Jazz, Rock & Roll and Rhythm & Blues into their unique and instantly identifiable sound. This broad approach has resulted in an appeal whose demographic is so wide that it is not unusual to find people from seven to seventy swaying side by side at a Powder Blues concert. Throughout the years they have toured ceaselessly throughout Canada, the United States and overseas, spreading the joy of a music that makes people smile and dance.
Fads come and go, as in the current resurgence of Swing, Juke and Jive music, but Powder Blues is no follower of trends. When they first burst upon the recording scene in late 1979, with their self-financed and self-produced debut album, ‘Uncut’, after nearly two years of wood shedding and honing their unique blend of sounds in Vancouver’s then flourishing nightclub scene, the established recording industry label giants shrugged their effort off as ‘not commercial’. The band was told there was ‘no market for the blues’.
Undiscouraged, the band pressed the album at their own expense and proceeded to sell it off stage and deliver it to radio stations. When the switchboards at the stations lit up with calls asking ‘who’s that?’ other stations followed suit. After selling nearly 30,000 copies in a matter of weeks, the major record labels came calling and entered a bidding war for the band’s services and the right to distribute this ‘non-commercial’ product nationally. RCA won the contract and to date that album has gone on to sell over a million copies worldwide.
Band highlights include winning Canada’s most prestigious National Music Award, the Juno, in 1981, headlining and recording a live album at the world famous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in 1983, being presented with the W.C. Handy Award in Memphis, Tennessee in 1986 and touring the Soviet Union and being released on Melodya Records in 1990. They have appeared in concert with such legendary names as Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, James Brown, Albert Collins, James Cotton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, the Who, ZZ Top, the Doobie Brothers, Edgar Winter and Tower of Power.
The Powder Blues latest CD titled ‘blues + jazz = BLAZZ!’ on Blue Wave Records which was released in 2004. The band continues to tour regularly and has never played less than 40 shows and sometimes as many as 300 shows in each of the 28 years they have been performing.

Gregor Hilden - Richie Arndt - Timo Gross 2009 The Vineyard Sessions
Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:56:14
Size: 128,76 MB
Rockig auch Too Hot To Handle. (http://www.timogross.com)

Omar & The Howlers 2004 Boogie Man
Genre: Blues
Rate: 272 kbps VBR / 44100
Time: 00:54:43
Size: 104,55 MB
review by Hal Horowitz
With his gravelly vocals that fall between Wolfman Jack and Howlin' Wolf, along with an ever-changing band of Howlers, Kent "Omar" Dykes charges through more rootsy boogie, blues, and rock & roll. For his first album of original material in four years, Dykes invited professional songwriters Darden Smith, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Stephen Bruton, and Alejandro Escovedo to co-write these 11 tunes. That not only elevates the quality of the tracks -- especially lyrically -- but also adds dashes of country and folk-rock to the mix. It diversifies but does not diminish Omar's gritty sound, and makes this one of his most accomplished and exciting recordings. Guest Howlers like guitarists Chris Duarte, Jon Dee Graham, and Malcolm "Papa Mali" Welbourne, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's old Double Trouble rhythm section, and Zappa/Jeff Beck drummer Terry Bozzio all contribute to the bone-shaking proceedings.
Dykes is fiery throughout, especially on the thumping Bo Diddley-inspired "Shakin'," and the Canned Heat/John Lee Hooker punch of the title cut. Even road songs "That's Just My Life" and "Mississippi Mud" resonate, despite their clichéd subject matter. Omar includes social commentary on "White Crosses" -- one of two Darden Smith co-writes he croons instead of howls with his usual bluster. The relatively subtle shuffle of "Drowning in Love" and the slow blues of the six-minute closing "All the Love We Can Stand" also alter the mood, giving the album some much-needed relief from the energized swamp stomp that dominates its attack. Boogie Man provides a perfect entry point for those new to the Omar experience, and a rollicking addition to those already entranced by his mighty mojo.

Following the success of their 1999 CD "Tying One On ... For The People", the Breeze Kings have, at long last, given real blues fans another taste of the good stuff: "You Got To Bring Some To Get Some"
Where their first CD showed us where the band was coming from, this new release shows us where the Breeze Kings are going. 9 original tunes highlight the CD and showcase the band's songwriting skills. These guys write as good as they play. But the best thing about the Breeze Kings is the sound. Each track reveals another layer of the band's talent, taste, and teamwork. The focus is on the song, the lyric, the tone, and the groove and not any individual instrument. The result is a blues CD that you can listen to over and over again.
Are you tired and/or disgusted with the "fluff" and "circus" music that is being sold as blues these days? Mediocre musicians with too many gimmicks playing lots of songs that sound the same. If that bothers you, then this band is the saving grace you've been searching for.
The Breeze Kings are making waves in Atlanta and all over the eastern USA because they have something special. Call it dedication, charisma, passion, on-stage chemistry ... whatever it is, this classic blues combo is one of Atlanta's most popular and sought after bands.
The Breeze Kings formed in October 1997. Today they are performing over 200 shows per year all over the east coast and have made several tours of Europe. Spotlighting complex guitar parts, explosive harmonica, and rock steady rhythms, their exciting and authentic blend of Chicago blues, Delta blues, and other regional styles has caught the attention of blues fans everywhere. Their energy has won over many new blues fans while their unwavering dedication to the time honored blues traditions has earned them the respect of many blues purists. This is a blues band - no question.
It's no wonder the Breeze Kings have won Creative Loafing's Best Blues Band in Atlanta award six times (1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006).

Album odlikujejo raznovrstnost, dinamicnost in tista prava godcevska neposrednost in prisrcnost. Kontrabantarji izvirajo iz skoraj vseh koncev Slovenije, zato v glasbeni kolaž lepijo panonsko in mediteransko godbo, podalpske poskocnice, klasicne in balkanske zvoke obogatene z romskim jezikom, madžaršcino in slovenskimi narecji.
(http://szomi.virb.com/2004-kontrabant)
