Band history
Several students of the Philosophy Faculty of Charles University in Prague formed the band Neočekávaný dýchánek (Unexpected Party) in early summer of 1992. The original line-up included lead vocal/flute, violin/viola, saxophone and three guitars, later joined by a bass player. We got courageous enough to play our first public shows in students’ clubs and local pubs in late 1993. The founding member, sax and clarinet player Michal Hrubý left the band along with bassist Martin Kopecký in 1995. A new sax/clarinet player and bassist completed the line-up along with a drummer, and the line-up stabilised at the end of 1997 when the original drummer Tomáš Dubský was replaced by Petr Kadaník. He was replaced by Jan Pydych in 2006.
Dýchánek recorded a live demo in October 1998 and its first official album (self-issued) came out in June 2000. To date, the album sold over 2,000 copies (mostly at concerts, through the Internet, and also through official distribution networks).
Neočekávaný dýchánek has played its original songs from the very beginning, authored almost exclusively by Michal Hrubý, the founder/sax player at the beginning. Following his departure, singer Zuzana Hanzlová and accordion player Michal “Faker” Šmíd have shared a majority of the band’s songwriting. All band members participate in creating the songs’ arrangements. The main sources of inspiration include klezmer, Balkan folk and our own country’s traditional music, as well as jazz, rock’n’roll and punk. All this is topped with a powerful alto of Zuzana Hanzlová (a journalist once described her singing as “female Tom Waits”).
