Album Notes

The music of Motels & Highways represents a timeline in the career of Old Union. These songs are full of all the first hand experiences that life in a travelling band can offer. This album is more than music and lyrics, this is a record carved of honest, carefully crafted and road tested songs dyed with our influences and finished in our own musical perspective. If nothing else, “Motels & Highways” is a crystal clear picture of the heart and soul of Old Union.

Lyrically the songs cover trips across the country from coast to coast and up into Canada. Personal songs of sacrifice, self-destruction, broken relationships and ultimately, redemption. Songs like the title track, “Motels and Highways”, “Jericho”, and “Time of Your Life”, are songs about taking the music you believe in to different places and the illustrating the journey along the way. “Backbreaker” and “Justified” tell the story of being pushed all the way to the edge with no room to move. “1000 New Ways To Fly” and “Sweet Freedom” are songs about the search of a means to an end, a search that has almost broken you down, yet will one day be worth all the sacrifice. There are many other emotions living in this music, waiting to be discovered.

Musically, these songs are deeply rooted in blues and rock. “Motels and Highways”, “Jericho”, and “Backbreaker” proudly lay down straight-ahead, guitar driven, rock and roll. The timeless mix of a rock band paired with a horn section are skilfully woven into “Ragged Blue.” Gospel influences can't be denied in the choir-like background vocals of “Justified” and “Sweet Freedom”. The album also has country leanings drawn from hours on the road and thumbing through stacks of CDs. You can hear evidence of this in songs such as “Time Of Your Life” and “One For the Family.” The latter of which includes the legendary Charlie Daniels’ unmistakable fiddle which gives the song a very “back porch” feel. Looking back at all these musical perspectives, when it is said and done, Motels and Highways is a rock 'n' roll album from a rock 'n' roll band.

One spin of this record and the listener knows exactly what Old Union is about, right here and now. There are no gimmicks or over produced aspects, none of the songs are presented out of context of what Old Union does at a live show. This is a recording “straight outta the box” from the musicians to you, subtle, raw, aggressive, and soulful. The songs are as real as the feelings expressed. Most of all, this is a celebration of life, music, and all that comes with it. Enjoy!

spreading this album for free is part of the reason the band is having trouble with success.

Whether sharing the link of a four-year-old album is blame for the failure of a band can be disputed splendidly. But, maybe. The fact is, that I did not know this band, until somebody shared a link with me. And nobody will buy something he doesn't know.

So you could see it positively as a cheap promotion for a band that is nameless here in Europe.

But if you want to put this album down, send me a PM and I will delete this post immediately.
