The "JJ Muggier Band" started in Harahan, Louisiana just outside of New Orleans in the Early 70's starting with the drummer Jude Lirette and bassist Calvin Huber. The band started playing originals and old blues tunes. Jamming at House Parties, Bars and Juke Joints. They were guys from the other side of the tracks, getting into their share of trouble in the early years.
Guitar players and singers would come and go, but Calvin and Jude would always be there. As time went on, more and more southern rock made its way into their sets until the band was playing all southern rock covers. In the early 90's, the band took a break. Calvin joined a band called Thunderbolt, doing a lot of originals. When keyboardist, Wayne Lohr left Thunderbolt, the band dissolved. Looking for another project, Calvin and Jude reformed The JJ Muggier Band. They also brought in Thunderbolt's vocalist/guitarist/songwriter, Jay B. Elston and Mike McAllister on drums. With Rick Windhorst on vocals and Jan Windhorst on keyboards, JJ Muggier started writing a lot of great southern rock music.
August 1994, The JJ Muggier Band was voted in the top 20 finalists in the U.S.A. by Yamaha Sound Check Music in competition with over 4,500 bands nationwide. The band signed a recording contract with Paradise Point Records in March 1994 and recorded their first CD at "Studio in the Country" in Bogalussa, LA, where Kansas, Blues Traveler, Dr. John, Gatemouth Brown, Cindrella, Stevie Wonder and many others recorded. The title cut from the CD, "Louisiana Born and Raised", soon became the theme song for a weekly radio show known as "Louisiana Home Grown Show" aired on WCKW radio in New Orleans, LA. IQ Radio in Macon, GA and other radio stations soon were playing several cuts from the first CD in their rotation. Soon they would be playing some of their newest cuts from the second CD.
After touring, opening for Molly Hatchet, Foghat and other artists, they decided to change record labels and members. Singer Rick Windhorst, keyboardist Jan Windhorst and guitarist Wayne Trosclair were replaced by Vic Larocca on guitar and old band mate from Thunderbolt, Wayne Lohr. They signed with Mugrock Productions in March of 1996. The band journeyed on a great musical adventure to Macon, GA where they began to lay tracks down for the second CD at the famous and historic "Capricorn Studio" now operated as "Phoenix Sound Recording". This studio is where The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, Wet Willie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Elvin Bishop and many others recorded groundbreaking historical music.
The band stayed at a cabin outside of Macon while they recorded. Old southern rock friends joined them for this project. Wayne "Animal" Turner, guitarist from the "Hank Williams Jr. Band" wrote two songs for the CD and played guitar also. Chris Hicks who played and recorded with 'The Outlaws" and is currently with 'The Marshall Tucker Band" played lead tracks. This was a very magical time for the band; many say it is their best CD. "Hear The Truth" was released July 1996; the band continued to tour and writes more music.
Going back to Studio in the Country to record their third CD, (1998-1999) with the project 3/4 of the way done, Jay B. Elston decided to leave the JJ Muggier Band due to communication and management problems and formed The Jay B. Elston Band releasing 2 CD's with that band. The JJ Muggier Band filled Jay's spot with Ronnie Dobbs, who had played with Thunderhead, BTO and Johnnie Winter. They finished the third CD titled New Ruins in 1999.
After releasing New Ruins the band toured more and decided to break up due to management problems. Calvin and Ronnie started a psychedelic power trio, Option Zero and did some recording and touring, doing shows with Kenny Wayne Shepard and Robin Trower.
In 2003 after not playing in years the original JJ Muggier Band (from the first CD) decided to get together, heal and do a string of reunion shows. With business and management problems out of the way, the band realized how special and wonderful it was to play together again.
Due to Rick and Jan's busy schedule with their party variety band, 4 Unplugged, they could not commit to JJ Muggler full time. Keyboardist/Vocalist Wayne Lohr (from the second CD) is back. Drummer Mike McAllister moved to Atlanta, GA. relocating due to Hurricane Katrina. JJ Muggier added Glen "Cool" Sears on congas and percussion. Glen is a former member of The Radiators and has played with JJ Muggier many times through the years.
Deciding to get the band up and running again JJ Muggier is Rockin! They again played The House of Blues New Orleans with Robin Trower recently and are doing their Tribute to Southern Rock, offering the best in Southern Rock Music.
The JJ Muggier Band has been on TV many times and has had radio airplay through the years. They have played at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, House of Blues, Tipitina's, Jimmy's Rock n Bowl and all the hot spots in New Orleans as well as recording three CD's and sharing the stage with the following bands Lynyrd Skynyrd, Dickey Betts, Marshall Tucker Band, Foghat, Molly Hatchet, Rick Derringer, David Allen Coe, BTO, Storyville, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Wet Willie, Bad Company, Edgar Winter Band, Robin Trower, Tab Benoit, Willie Nelson, Steppenwolf and Charlie Daniels.
