Journeyman guitarist Forrest McDonald and veteran vocalist and pianist Raymond Victor serve up an appealing musical smorgasbord with Finger Licking Blues. Over the years this duo has performed with such luminaries as John Lee Hooker, Charlie Musselwhite, Roy Gaines, Bobby Wommack, and Bobby "Blue" Bland. Here in the high company of the 3D Blues Band and guest guitarists Bob Margolin and Barry Richman, McDonald and Victor presents a 13 song trip that stretches boundaries.

This self-produced album blends elements of soul, R&B, funk, as well as vintage Chicago and Texas blues. McDonald processes these forms with a rocker's sensibility, hammering away on a screaming Gibson Les Paul, he punctuates his songs with soaring, note-crammed solos played at blinding speed. While such an approach could easily miss its mark in less capable hands, McDonald makes it work more often than not. He successfully avoids the guitar hero's tendency to wail aimlessly and instead manages to find a path that furthers the songs' stories.

Victor is a blues singer, with depth. He tears through the gospel like "Sharpened Up My Axes" with the most gut wrenching vocal tone, drawing on an apparently endless
well of emotion for this song of loss and revenge. Innovation is on display with the danceable, rumba-driven groove given to Howlin Wolf's "Who's Been Talking." And the discs version of "Ode To Billy Joe" is by itself worth the price of admission. While the Bobbie Gentry hit has been covered on a number of recent blues releases, this one is a crowning achievement. Bob Margolin's haunting slide guitar, spooking along behind the verse, should send chills up the spine of any blues aficionado. McDonald's sparse, understated rhythm guitar here is mesmerizing; there could be no better proof that less is more. Finger Licking Blues covers a lot of ground, and Forrest McDonald mixes his ingredients well. (Keith A. Mulhare for Blues Revue)
