Atlanta's Barry Richman defies description. His guitar work sounds like Larry Carlton at times, and hints at a Todd Rundgren influence at others. These are the best kinds of guitar players, influenced by a wide array of players, but molding their own sound from the collected input.
Richman has assembled a stable of ultra-talented musicians to support his project as well, from the vocals of Michael Meredith on "White Trash TV" to Apartment Q-258 on drums (that's what it says here in the liner notes, folks) on the same song. Gleason is obviously a talented player as well, carrying the bulk of synthesizers, organ, and more on the all-too-hip instrumental "Zambi," which sounds like Frank Zappa scoring a TV movie. "Here Again" is a killer track featuring Chris Hicks (Marshall Tucker, the Outlaws) on lead vocals. This is a great song, with loving lyrics like: "Peanut butter sandwich/Served just after dawn/While you watch Bewitched and wait to post your bond." The next four tracks are all instrumentals, leading off with the jazzy "Macon," reminiscent once again of Carlton. "Temporary Eternity," a short piece that sounds like a film soundtrack, leads us into "151 Avenue B," with a fantastic sax lead from Tomas Ramirez, and the laid-back "Scandals." Next up is "Black Texas Highway," a blues rocker with vocals from David Wright. Three more instrumentals follow: "Simba's Revenge," "Tea Time," and the disco-laden "Giant Tacos." The set closes out with another song called "Without Expression," once again featuring Hicks on vocals.
Barry Richman delivers the goods with Temporary Eternity, bringing home rock, blues, jazz, and more in one nice, neat package that is highly listenable. A fine album from an extraordinary guitarist.
