This is an amazingly authentic band with lots of grit and soul. Led by George, ''Racky'' Thomas, who sings with unaffected ease & blows powerful high compression harp, the band sounds like they have been together for years. Guitarist Nick Adams plays sympathetic to the songs and never overstays his welcome while drummer Jon Ross hits the skins with soul & restraint. All but one of the songs are originals but sound like they come from years before. The band has talent on many different levels and special guest guitarist Troy Gonyea adds fire to 3 of the tunes.

The Racky Thomas Band 1998 Last Of The Big Spenders

The Racky Thomas Band comes from Boston, and they have put out three self-released CDs. Last of the Big Spenders was released in 1998 and is their second CD, a great collection of some old time blues. The songs on this CD are very diverse and just a whole lot of fun to listen to and, no matter what style they decide to play, they pull it off.

The CD starts off with a bang with "Sweet Dough Baker," a great old time blues song with very nicely played guitar by Nick Adams and vocals by Racky, who also plays harmonica. The next track, "Don't Treat Me Like That," picks up right where "Sweet Dough Baker" left off, but with more of a sly feeling to it. The next couple of songs are very solid and well played, with "Rack'em Up" a great instrumental showcase for Racky's harp playing. "Last of the Big Time Spenders" is a very solid straight ahead blues song, and it sounds new and refreshing. Track eight, "Tears Fell Down Like Rain," is the best song, and it is unlike anything else on the CD as it is a ballad about a relationship that did not work out that well. The Racky Thomas Band hails from Boston, Massachusetts but plays the blues as though they came right out of post-war Chicago or the Mississippi delta. The band has received widespread critical praise in local, national, and international blues publications, as well as worldwide radio airplay of their two most recent self-produced cd’s; Last Of The Big Spenders, and Troubled All the time.

The band formed in 1995 and has been performing throughout the northeast to enthusiastic audiences, steadily gaining a devoted following ever since. The band got a great boost in 1997 by winning Boston’s prestigious Battle of the Blues Bands. That earned them a trip to Memphis, TN. To compete in the International Blues Competition where they made a strong showing and gained broader exposure.

The band maintains a steady performance schedule of over 150 dates a year and continues to earn rave reviews from critics and music enthusiasts alike. The band also has a number of festival performances to their credit, and has opened for Luther ‘Guitar’ Jr. Johnson, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland, Paul Rishell & Annie Raines, and Susan Tedeschi.
