Double live albums were commonplace during the '70s, even for bands that weren't particularly good in concert. As a travelin' band, Lynyrd Skynyrd made their fame and fortune by being good in concert, so it made sense that they released a double-live, entitled One More from the Road, in 1976, months after the release of their fourth album, Gimme Back My Bullets. That might have been rather quick for a live album -- only three years separated this record from the group's debut -- but it was enthusiastically embraced, entering the Top Ten (it would become one of their best-selling albums, as well). It's easy to see why it was welcomed, since this album demonstrates what a phenomenal catalog of songs Skynyrd accumulated.

Street Survivors, which appeared the following year, added "That Smell" and "You Got That Right" to the canon, but this pretty much has everything else, sometimes extended into jams as long as those of the Allmans, but always much rawer, nearly dangerous. That catalog, as much as the strong performances, makes One More from the Road worth hearing. Heard here, on one record, the consistency of Skynyrd's work falls into relief, and they not only clearly tower above their peers based on what's here; the cover of "T for Texas" illustrates that they're carrying on the Southern tradition, not starting a new one. Like most live albums, this is not necessarily essential, but if you're a fan, it's damn hard to take this album off after it starts.

The 1987 set Legend rounds up previously unreleased tracks and a few rarities, such as non-LP B-sides. At the time, this was a real worthwhile endeavour but in the two decades since its appearance, most of this has shown up as bonus tracks on expanded editions or on other comps -- comps that now offer a bit more bang for their buck. Still, as a rarities collection this does have a bit of a punch, thanks to an early version of "Truck Drivin' Man," "Georgia Peaches," and "One in the Sun."

Street Survivors is a southern rock album by Lynyrd Skynyrd, released in October 1977 (see 1977 in music). Three days after the album's release, the band's chartered airplane crashed en route to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, killing the pilot and some band members, including lead singer and songwriter Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist/singer/songwriter Steve Gaines, and severely injuring most who survived the crash. Perhaps partially as a result of the attention garnered by the tragedy, the album and the lead single "What's Your Name" did quite well on the charts. After an extensive recovery process, the surviving original band members ultimately decided to disband Lynyrd Skynyrd. In the early 1980's, two derivative bands, The Rossington-Collins Band and The Allen Collins Band, rose from the figurative ashes of this rock n roll disaster to achieve moderate and minimal success, respectively.

The original pressing of the cover of Street Survivors had a photograph of the band standing in flames. Eerily, in the original cover, Gaines' eyes were closed and his head appears to be surrounded by flames. The cover was changed to an alternate photo with an all-black background in respect of the deceased. Today, thirty years later, the original "flames" cover is on the front of the case, while the alternate cover serves as the back of the case.

So named because this consists of Skynyrd's earliest recordings and was released after the tragic plane crash, thereby seeming to close the door on the band's career, Skynyrd's First and...Last is more than a simple historic curiosity, but not too much more. This music is more notable for being interesting -- in how it's possible to hear Ronnie VanZant coming into his own as a writer, or hearing future Blackfoot leader Ricky Medlocke's early songs -- than it is for being good, which it certainly is. Taken on its own, separated from the rest of the group's catalog, this would likely be seen as a great forgotten hard rock album from an obscure Southern outfit, but since Skynyrd went on to greater things, this winds up as a footnote -- enjoyable

Lynyrd Skynyrd 1999 Solo Flytes

Lynyrd Skynyrd wisely disbanded after the tragic 1977 plane crash that killed its leader, Ronnie VanZant. The band later reunited, another wise move, but at that point in time, the members needed time to grieve and move on by pursuing other projects. And that's exactly what they did. Guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins formed the Rossington-Collins Band, which featured various other Skynyrd members. A little while later, drummer Artimus Pyle formed his own band. Both groups were active in the early '80s, with Collins releasing his own album in 1983, but tragedy struck again in 1986 when Collins suffered a car accident that left him paralyzed. Rossington carried on briefly, before re-forming Skynyrd.

Highlights from these three post-Skynyrd bands, plus a solo cut by Steve Gaines, the guitarist who joined Skynyrd for the Street Survivors album, are compiled on 1999's Solo Flytes, a 17-track collection that tells everything that needs to be told about this period in the band's history. Neither the Rossington-Collins Band (which dominates this disc with 11 songs), the Artimus Pyle Band, nor the Allen Collins Band made any classics, but they were entertaining Southern rock outfits. By and large, the music on Solo Flytes is generic material in the best sense — meaning that it typifies its genre — but it suffers from songwriting that is not only weaker than Ronnie VanZant's, but not as good as that of .38 Special, the most popular Southern rock band of the early '80s. That said, dedicated fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd will likely find this interesting and, by and large, pretty enjoyable. It fills in some gaps nicely, pulling the best songs from records that were well-done but uneven. REVIEW by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
