V petem Kontrabantovem albumu se Dobri geni prepletajo v vsem svojem žlahtnem rodovniku. S pisanostjo izbora pesmi in "žmohtnostjo" interpretacije Kontrabant, kot daljna zvezda stalnica iz sosednje galaksije, nadaljuje s "švercerskim" poslanstvom.

V glasbenem vesolju je pogosto na misiji nemogoce, ko združuje razlicne kulture in glasbene prakse v samosvojo in prepoznavno glasbeno obliko, ki v istem dahu navduši in pogosto šokira.

Dobre gene Kontrabantarji išcejo tako v ljudskih napevih domacih, kot tudi drugih kulturnih prostranstvih glasbene neskoncnosti.

Sound Like: Ching Dong (A Japanese advertising Marching Band), Gypsy-Balkan Music, Klezmer, Old Jass, Rock, Brazil, Irish, Musette, Classic, Biguine.

A very rare band from Japan playing Klezmer (Jewish) and Gypsy (Roma) music.

The band formed in 1999. Not using any electrical instruments at all, the band's sound reminds one of nostalgic circus music and old jass bands. With all the different backgrounds of the musicians from Ching-Dong (A Japanese advertising Marching Band), Jazz, Rock, Pop, New Orleans, Latin, Musette, Irish, to Classical, and their free style performance, the band is able to create a distinctive world of their own.
They are active on the streets, event spaces, and clubs in and around Osaka.

They played together and opened for bands like: "Fanfare Ciocarlia” a Rumanian Gypsy brass band, "Think of One" from Belgium, and "Willem Breuker Kollektief" from Holland, and more...

Po desetih letih tihotapljenja razlicnih godb je nastala energicna muzika zelo uigranega in še nikoli do sedaj tako dobrega Kontrabanta. Petnajst zelo razlicnih pesmi nas popeljejo po zakladnici slovenskih ljudskih in v vode židovskega klezmerja. Iz popotovanja po Bolgariji je prešvercana Bolgarska. Ne manjkajo kontrabantarski originalni dokazi, kako rock n'roll in reagea izvirata iz Prekmurja in da imajo keltske viže svoj domicil na Gorenjskem. Kontrabant se na akusticnih inštrumentih spopade z elektronsko glasbo. Poleg novega violinista je s Kontrabantom na zgošcenki Prešvercano tihotapil tudi ljudski godec iz Kamniških planin Janez Vrenjak-Stegn. Zapel je en star šlager in prav ljubko zaneseno dolenjsko ljudsko pesem. Album odlikujejo raznovrstnost, dinamicnost in tista prava godcevska neposrednost in prisrcnost. Na nastopih v živo, na katerih Kontrabant s svojim prepoznavnim muziciranjem vedno znova dokazuje, da je eden najboljših etno bendov v Sloveniji, se pokažejo še dodatne kvalitete benda, katere se žal ne da ujeti na zgošcenko. Njihova glasba gravitira k etnu, vibrirajo pa v vseh zvrsteh, ki se jim ponujajo za tihotapljenje. Kontrabant je prava trans-slovenska glasbena tolpa. Kontrabantarji izvirajo iz skoraj vseh koncev Slovenije, zato v glasbeni kolaž lepijo panonsko in mediteransko godbo, podalpske poskocnice, klasicne in balkanske zvoke obogatene z romskim jezikom, madžaršcino in slovenskimi narecji.

Glasba Kontrabanta opeva ljudi, obicaje, domoljublje, vse, kar krasi našo deželo.

Težko bi našli še kakšno zasedbo, ki je tako pester glasbeni zemljevid Slovenije.

Utrnilo se nam je po dveh letih kontrabantarskega godcevstva. Nadobudni smo odšli v studio in posneli prvi konkretni etno glasbeni projekt, na katerem smo prepevali pretežno v jeziku prekmurskih Romov. Kot gost je z nami prepeval tudi romski pevec Jože Kramberger, ki se je dve leti prej proslavil tudi v filmu Halgato in postal slovenski igralec leta. Njegova melanholicna romsko-panonska duša in Kontrabantov svež temperament sta spocela glasbo, za katero bo cas pokazal pravo mesto na godcevskem piadestalu jugovzhodne Evrope. V Sloveniji zgodaj spomladi gojimo še vedno svojevrstno vseljudsko nabiralništvo. Takoj, ko skopni sneg, se mnoči.no pasemo po travnikih in v PVC vrečke nabiramo regrat. S to željo, kateri dodamo kuhan krompir, trdo kuhana jajčka, česen in nepogre.ljivo bučno olje, pripravljamo spomladansko vitaminsko solato, kateri pravimo: Regrat u salat. Despite the banal laws of showbiz, despite the business as it is – "Vasja Club", that is Vasyl Gontarsky, already releases his third album. And already for the third time pleasantly surprises with sincerity and freshness, which can be found with far not every young guy even – and this fellow is adult already. It seems he should have long ago and forever settle down, longer for comfort and definiteness – but, you see, he listens to his soul, and it looks for different things.

But it is possible to say that there was more rock-and-roll on the first album, on the second one – more of punk-chanson, and on this one – more of blues. And frisky blues, with elements of swing, with the atmosphere of nightclubs of the pre-electronic epoch, with a surprising smile in the sad eyes... At that, next to classic American blues, sheer Ukrainian blues sounds here as well – as far as it is possible in general.

They sizzle at concerts and enthuse brimming concert audiences. At weddings they are the bride's accomplice, and when playing to celebrate a divorce, they work like a hangover cure.

They gravitate towards ethno music, but vibrate in all varieties that give themselves up for smuggling. Kontrabant is the first trans-Slovenian music gang. The Kontrabant guys come from almost all parts of Slovenia, making their musical collage a mix of Pannonian and Mediterranean sounds, dancing songs from the Alps, classical and Balkan songs trimmed with dialects from their own homeland, and the languages of the Roma and nearby Hungary.

The merry sounds of Kontrabant invigorate the old, enchant the young, surprise the bad tempered and drive the party animals wild!

KontraMISSION: smuggling ethno-party music

Kontrabant has for more than a decade been exploring the sounds of Slovenia: Gypsy, Pannonian, Balkan, Mediterranean ethno music influences, taking great delight in incorporating these with urban musical practices into the unmistakable smuggled collage that makes up the songs and melodies of Kontrabant. Already at the beginning of their musical travels the Kontrabant guys forged friendships with the Slovenian gypsies, which has had a strong influence on their music. But an even more significant influence on Kontrabant's musical expression definitely has to be the variety of environments and musical experiences of the guys in the band, and that includes those that were still whippersnappers.

Kontrabant's musical smuggling has an important mission to uphold in popularising the musical treasures from different environments and areas of human endeavour, with the intention of making listeners actively learn and understand others with different lives, cultures and perceptions of the world. Such a diverse collage of musical practices can one only rarely experience in one place! That's Kontrabant's concerts and the music on as many as four of their solo CDs.

Sadly, in recent years, extreme forms of nationalism have sprung up all over Europe. This has spurred on the band even more to develop its recognisable music making and original smuggler's stories of also those minorities that have far too often become ostracised and threatened entities. With the help of the universal language of music, Kontrabant in an informal, very amusing way goes beyond those boundaries, smashes through negative stereotypes and opens up the horizons of those that would otherwise find it difficult to accept something foreign and unknown.

Respect and tolerance of others is an important, and for many a fairly unfamiliar notion in our social order. Kontrabant in its way promotes a better understanding among the people of this world.

biography by Frank Eisenhuth

Based in Berlin, Germany, the 17 Hippies started off in 1995 as a trio playing the otherwise unlikely mix of Cajun and Baroque music. Gradually, they expanded their line-up and eventually ended up as an orchestra consisting of twenty, sometimes even thirty musicians. Coming from different backgrounds like rock, jazz and classical music, the band members assimilated virtually any musical style available and blended all of this into their own unique sound. Thus, they feel equally at home whether playing at boisterous wedding parties or in the chamber music room. Appearances at the renown SXSW festival in Austin, Texas in 1998 or the simultaneous release of CDs in French, German and Italian in the respective countries in 1999 all contributed to the growing global reputation of this ensemble of world citizens. The band also pursued other projects such as the release of a book of music for children (1999) and the soundtrack for the Andreas Dresen movie Halbe Treppe (English title: Grillpoint) (2002) which won a prize at the 2002 Berlinale, the renown Berlin film festival, and is one of the highlights of post-reunification German cinema.
