Some days, there's no better pick-me-up than a simple basic blues disc - and, to prove it, the recent release by Monster Mike Welch, Just Like It Is (VizzTone), has been fulfilling that particular need in my house lately.

A slick set of electrified twelve-bar that on more than one occasion sounds redolent of sixties British bloozmanship (check the Cream-y ooohs in album opener "She Makes Time"), the disc is a bracing showcase for the onetime blues prodigy's respectful, yet energetic, guitarwork. If no new ground gets broken on this disc, a good time's still had by all.

As a vocalist, Welch isn't strong enough to pull off any old blues cliché, but on his best songs, he puts enough of a modern spin on his stories to make 'em convincing. We may not quite accept it when he starts going on about black cat bones (as he does in a cover of Willie Dixon's classic "I've Got A Strange Feeling"), but when he sings about wanting to move to another country 'cause he can't find a job in this one, the sentiment's all too credible.

Where Monster Mike comes across most convincing, though, are in his simple love songs. In "My Baby Loves Me," "A Perfect World" and "I'm Not A Stupid Man," Welch's crooning voice is beautifully suited to his man/boyish declarations of love. "She sez that I'm a good man," he declares, "And I would never make my baby lie." And for the space of the song, at least, we know he means what he's saying.

The disc's big draw, however, lies in Welch's guitar-playing, which is both tidy (I hear hints of Steve Cropper concision in many of his solos) and dynamic. Some of the high spots on this disc: the stuttery guitar lines on "My Baby Loves Me," the more stately guitar & piano solos in "Love That Burns," the rollicking work in "Move Along," plus the disc's one instrumental, "Sticky Whisket," which even manages to sneak a small piece of surf tremolo into the mix.

I'd wager this stuff sounds even more raucous in a smoky blues club, but listening to it on the CD player in bed late at night, it definitely gets the job done.

"In a perfect world," Welch sings in the CD's title-inspiring song, "life would be just like it is." Listening to the man effortlessly swoop over keyboardist Anthony Geraci's sprightly fingering, you can almost see how he came up with that seemingly unbelievable conceit. Review by François Couture

Emerson, Lake & Palmer's 1970 eponymous LP was only a rehearsal. It hit hard because of the novelty of the act (allegedly the first supergroup in rock history), but felt more like a collection of individual efforts and ideas than a collective work. All doubts were dissipated by the release of Tarkus in 1971. Side one of the original LP is occupied by the 21-minute title epic track, beating both Genesis' "Supper's Ready" and Yes' "Close to the Edge" by a year. Unlike the latter group's cut-and-paste technique to obtain long suites, "Tarkus" is a thoroughly written, focused piece of music. It remains among the Top Ten classic tracks in progressive rock history.

Because of the strength of side one, the material on the album's second half has been quickly forgotten -- with one good reason: it doesn't match the strength of its counterpart -- but "Bitches Crystal" and "A Time and a Place" make two good prog rock tracks, the latter being particularly rocking. "Jeremy Bender" is the first in a series of honky tonk-spiced, Far-West-related songs. This one and the rock & roll closer "Are You Ready Eddy?" are the only two tracks worth throwing away. Otherwise Tarkus makes a very solid album, especially to the ears of prog rock fans -- no Greg Lake acoustic ballads, no lengthy jazz interludes. More accomplished than the trio's first album, but not quite as polished as Brain Salad Surgery,

Tarkus is nevertheless a must-have.

Review by Steve Huey

One of the most distinctive records of the early alternative movement and an enduring cult classic, Violent Femmes weds the geeky, child-man persona of Jonathan Richman and the tense, jittery, hyperactive feel of new wave in an unlikely context: raw, amateurish acoustic folk-rock. The music also owes something to the Modern Lovers' minimalism, but powered by Brian Ritchie's busy acoustic bass riffing and the urgency and wild abandon of punk rock, the Femmes forged a sound all their own.

Still, the main reason Violent Femmes became the preferred soundtrack for the lives of many an angst-ridden teenager is lead singer and songwriter Gordon Gano. Naive and childish one minute, bitterly frustrated and rebellious the next, Gano's vocals perfectly captured the contradictions of adolescence and the difficulties of making the transition to adulthood. Clever lyrical flourishes didn't hurt either; while "Blister In the Sun" has deservedly become a standard, "Kiss Off"'s chant-along "count-up" section, "Add It Up"'s escalating "Why can't I get just one..." couplets, and "Gimme the Car"'s profanity-obscuring guitar bends ensured that Gano's intensely vulnerable confessions of despair and maladjustment came off as catchy and humorous as well.

Even if the songwriting slips a bit on occasion, Gano's personality keeps the music engaging and compelling without overindulging in his seemingly willful naiveté. For the remainder of their career, the group would only approach this level in isolated moments.
