Elephant's Memory 1969 Songs From Midnight Cowboy

After original vocalist Carly Simon left Elephant's Memory for her own fame and fortune, the band recorded their self-titled Buddah debut, Elephant's Memory, with Michal Shapiro handling the female lead. That disc is not their John Lennon/Yoko Ono/David Peel Apple Records debut from 1972, which was also named after this ensemble. When two Elephant's Memory songs from the 1969 Buddah Records album appeared in the Capitol Records soundtrack to the film Midnight Cowboy, Buddah vice president Neil Bogart revamped and re-released the original LP, most likely and understandably, to cash in on the attention the band was getting from the hit film.

"Old Man Willow" and "Jungle Gym at the Zoo" from the first LP appeared in Midnight Cowboy, and they show up again on side one of this disc along with a different spin on the Nilsson hit "Everybody's Talkin'." Here Michal Shapiro gives a woman's take on the classic Fred Neil composition over a poppy/folksy Wes Farrell production. There's a strange instrumental version of John Barry's theme to "Midnight Cowboy," jazzy rock with a female vocal, most likely Michal, adding a nice eerie resonance to the spirited and jumpy rendition, a far cry from the version that contained Vinny Bell's elegant guitar, the Top Ten hit for Ferrante & Teicher in 1969. The two new titles as well as the Elephant's Memory material from the movie make up side one. Side two contains seven more titles from the first LP, including the singles that were released from that disc, "Crossroads of the Stepping Stones" and "Don't Put Me on Trial," two excellent slices of '60s pop. Over 40 minutes of music graces Songs From Midnight Cowboy Plus Their Hit Singles, the two new titles plus everything from the Buddah debut minus the songs "Band of Love" and "Hot Dog Man" (which was the flip of the 45 rpm "Jungle Gym at the Zoo"). The album could have been even more interesting had their 45 rpm "Keep Free, Pts. 1 & 2" from November 1968 found its way onboard rather than the reissue of "Yogurt Song," a composition from keyboardist Richard Sussman and drummer Rick Frank which sounds like a Frank Zappa nightmare.

Other than that, the album actually is quite consistent and is lots of fun. Later releases Take It to the Streets and Angels Forever don't have the pop meets psychedelia underground feel of this neo-bubblegum period piece.

Crazy. This guy is crazy. See (hear) what his guitar is put up to! Matti Norlin? I didn't know until a friend of mine mails me this CD. Crazy about guitar, this Matti Norlin sure is!

I don't know why, I didn't play the CD right away. It stayed there, on the living room table, scoffing at me with its title: Slidin' Out. And then I put it in the player ... and ... it exploded!

"What I like the most of playing in different tunings is that most of the time I don't know which notes I play". This is what Matti says in the liner notes. The first number, Not Allowed, tells it all: it tousles one's hair with the slide! And everything that follows is of the same kind, even if the beat (sometimes) slows down. In addition to the furious slide (Groovin' for instance), Matti Norlin also plays a breathtaking finger picking (Cool Down is a good sample of it). Slidin' Out is a tune "hard to play, especially since I tend to play it fast". oh yeah??!! But amongst those 14 songs (all originals), there are a few moments of relative respite, with pure jewels such as Rooftop Jive or This Day Will Never Return.

Recorded in Stockholm (didn't I tell you? Matti Norlin is swedish) in his own flat, alone with his guitars (6 and 12 strings, National, banjo) and his stomping foot as a rhythm section, you alredy have understood this CD is a little chef d'ouvre of acoustic guitar.

Little Caesar 2009 Redemption

Talk about stepping into a time warp. Little Caesar always represented 'substance over style', which probably led to their commercial failure in the hair-spray fog of the late 80s, and with Redemption, the band's first new material in 17 years, it sounds as if time has stood still over all these years. An endless stream of middle-aged musicians have returned in the last few years with dreams of recapturing the magic that they once (or never did) possessed, but few have managed to do it as well as Little Caesar. Of course few bands have a vocalist with the talent of Ron Young, whose bluesy and soulful voice always set this band at the top of the hard rock heap.

The only things missing from the current version of Little Caesar are guitarist Apache and the long flowing hair. The sound is practically identical to what they sounded like ages ago. They were never the heaviest band in town, and they still aren't. What they are, and always have been, is a rhythm and blues rock band that writes quality songs.

Redemption kicks off with "Same Old Story", a song previously found on the band's odd-n-ends collection This Time It's Different, and is a great way to ease into things. From there we get taken through a course of Little Caesar 101. "Supersonic" rolls right along before the soul starts pouring out on "Loving You Is Killing Me". "Witness Stand" keeps things going with a steady and groovy guitar riff throughout before Ron Young shows how a ballad should be properly handled with "Redemption", a song that has a Manic Eden feel to it. Next up is one of the best tracks on the CD, "Sick And Tired", which finds the band at their heaviest followed closely by "Real Rock Drive" which stutters due to a lackluster chorus. The band shows their heartfelt side on two of the last three tracks, closing off this great release in fine fashion.

Little Caesar have always managed to set themselves apart from the crowd, and continue to do it today. The band decided to release Redemption on their own, apart from the pressures and influence of record companies. It is no longer about fame and fortune for the members of Little Caesar, it is simply about releasing quality music to the fans that remember them. We as fans should be thanking them for this release, and every other musician that once had teased-hair and tight pants should use Redemption as the blueprint for how a band should stage their comeback.
